After years of call center jobs (and burnout), I decided on a nice "safe" little job with normal hours. I am now back to being a receptionist and know that my evenings and weekends are free.
Tried a few home party businesses and found I didn't like them as I used to. Now - with BellaOnline, and other things, I am pursuing a real career as a writer.
I am right handed, but have always worn my watch on my left hand.

I don't have a job, now. I have a BA in art and have some office, retail and library aide experience. I've spent pretty much all of my adult life taking care of family members. Dad died of cancer, mom's mental illness and later a brain aneurysm, sis's drug addiction, bro's alcoholism. Not much time for me! Luckily mom owns rental property so I can live here and have some income. I'm trying to get a job walking and sitting people's dogs for a little extra income. My live-in b/f is an art teacher and that helps. Turned out to be a strange life for me!

I develop and assess high school curriculum and I'm working on my PhD. My job is part time but it pays really well and gives me flexibility to work on my PhD. I get really stressed out and I'm very schedule oriented, I have panic attaks if my schedule is thrown off, which is a major reason why I don't want kids. I can't imagine trying to do work, school, and kids.

I'm in human resources, and like a lot of you here, I quit a higher paying job in a field I absolutely hated so I could start over in HR. I am so glad I did that, and so glad I was able to do it financially. I think it's interesting how many people on this board made career changes to be more fulfilled and happy!
the only thing i want to parent is my great dane!

I think it's interesting how many people on this board made career changes to be more fulfilled and happy! It's because we can afford to. We have not sold our rights to happiness for the almighty dollar, like so many parents are forced to do. We can afford to prioritize ourselves when necessary. I am unwilling to trade my happiness for more money. That's why I turned down that job offer in January. The job would have bumped up my income about 30%, but I would have been miserable and would have had to sacrifice a lot of flexibility. No thanks, I don't need the money THAT bad!

Not working for money is a great freedom. We only have to worry about ourselves and if we have to go periods of eating ramen noodles to get to our dreams we can, but you can't make those same sacrifices when children are depending on you. Or at least I don't think you should.

Myrabeth, I did the same thing last year. The new position (in another dept) would have been a lot more than I was making--with flex hours to boot--but the stress would have been way too high. And the dept has a huge turnover. I'd much rather make less $, have less stress, and keep my job long term, thank you!
But what if I was saving for the a kid's college education? Would I have been tempted? Maybe.
Taitinfae, It really is a freedom, isn't it?

I work at a public library as an assistant reference librarian. I am currently in graduate school and will have my Masters in Library and Information Science in summer '09.

Feebee - I love this line, "I don't do trapped very well"... I'm with you - I don't do trapped full stop... I'm still reeling over the personality quiz we all did on-line - the opening statement knocked me for six, "needs the freedom to be spontaneous"...me in a sentence. I actually become quite flat/depressed when I'm confined in anyway... Anyway..back on topic... I'm a lawyer specializing in commercial crime - for the last 8-10 years I've worked on international matters that take me all over the world but mainly, HK and Japan. Kyoto is almost my second home... I head a team of lawyers, forensic accountants & support staff. (including private investigators) The composition of my team hasn't changed in 6 years - they're like members of my family. I also, speak at seminars/conferences on behalf of my Japanese client usually on subjects like corporate risk management, civil recovery and forensic financial analysis... I enjoy my work very much - doubt I could go back to working behind a desk full time at this point.
