I've noticed that a lot of the women on this forum seem to work in computing. That would suggest that you have strong capacity for abstract thought.

A big expert in autism is Simon Baron-Cohen, who came up with the theory that people's brains differ on the empathising-systematising dimension and that females in general tend towards Empathising, and males towards Systematizing. Here's a link to an article on it:

I'm a picture framer, when someone comes into the store with a print/painting/sword (yes I've done at least one sword) I help them figure out what color background, if any, and the moulding for the frame. I also am the one who cuts the mats, uses a miter saw to chop the moulding and put the whole thing together. If I wasn't a dyscalculate though, I just might have gone into a scientific field. I still go to the livescience website and read nearly every article because I find it fascinating. Unfortunately, to be a good scientist you need to be able to handle math, and my brain isn't wired for that. :P

I'm a development director for a nonprofit. I write grant applications, coordinate fundraising events, and market our programs.

I'm pretty computer-literate, though, and am the one called on to fix things in the office. I like putting things together. I like systems. However, I can also be pretty empathetic. Go figure.

Well Trish, the theory accounts for the in-betweenys by saying they are Balanced. Rare, beautiful creatures...

I think I come out as Empathetic but am doing OK with the statistics and maths in my current studies. I can get good results in maths, just very very slowly!

Of course I've also seen posts from people here who work with children, so perhaps any notion that CF women tend to be Systematizers is blown out of the water!

I own and operate a decorative painting business (faux and decorative paint finishes, fine art, high end straight painting...) and play bass professionally in 3 working bands.

I have just enough left brain to survive, so I doubt I fit the profile.

I'm a fiction writer who isn't making any money at it yet. I study people and earn my money working in retail.

I'm the classic "very left-handed" person: completely dependent on my left hand (I can't even adequately feed myself with my right) and so right-brained that handling the household budget and balancing the checkbook count as achievements in math.

Most of what I know about computing and the science of things we use in our daily lives I learned from my fiance, who works as a network technician/ administrator. He's the brains of the family.

I work in marketing for an engineering firm (mostly men). Funny thing, that. I don't feel science-headed at all (lib.arts/English degree) but I guess I really do lean that way. And I'm math-phobic/math-impaired (thanks to a college algebra instructor who made me feel like an idiot).

Sometimes I think I can't take one more minute of engineers (DH is one, too). But then I consider that our office is across from a state department of mostly women, and I will kill someone if I had to work with a bunch of cackling hens.

ps - Trish, how did you get into non-profit development? That is where my passion is; I would love to work somewhere that made a difference in people's lives. Heck, if someone would pay me good money to talk about rabbits all day, I'd be there in a heartbeat! Unfortunately, I make more money doing this. I guess the trade-off is that it finances my rabbit-habit and I can always volunteer.

Office Manager for building engineers - all men.
I fit right in working with all men. I have never been around a huge group of women so I couldn't handle that!
The men fight amongst themselves and I am exempt from all of that.

I'm a software engineer/developer for a company that probably made the chip in your computer. I definitely fit the abstract thinking model. Surprisingly in my group at work there are 4 women developers and only 3 men. One of the other women is also CF. But I'm the only American woman in the group. I love working with men and the women in my field tend to be more like me so it works out great.
