I also heard that the 400IU that you get in multivitamins is not nearly enough,

Sorry to hear this Becky - my mother is going through a really bad time at the moment also due to Vitamin D deficiency. She has osteoporosis, and has had calcium boosts for many years, but the doctors now realised that the amount of Vitamin D included in the supplements is not enough (as Rosie mentioned). My mother spent 40 years in an office, and then listened to the scaremongering of cancer councils and avoided the sun or covered up for the tiny amount of time she happened to be outdoors. The result is that her bones micro-fracture doing even basic tasks like shifting a chair and bending over too quickly.

Very good article smile

I'm sorry to hear about your mom, Elle. I'm so glad we discovered it in time for me to hopefully reverse bone loss. I went in to see a Rheumatologist for what I thought was arthritis (runs in my family) and she decided to take a serum 25 (OH) D test, and my numbers are very low. I'm on my second round of mega-doses of Vitamin D because the first round didn't work. Though it didn't bring up my numbers, it took care of 80% of the Fibromyalgia symptoms I was experience.

My oldest daughter complains of bone and muscle pain. I chalked it up to growing pains, but now I wonder if I should have her level check, too.

Thanks for the feedback on my article! :o)

Rosie, yes, 400 IU is too low for many, esp. those living about the 30th parallel and/or darker-skinned. Studies are showing that we can actually tolerate as much at 1,000 IU. I'm very sorry to hear about your osteoporosis. It sounds so painful! I hope the Vitamin D regime helps significantly.

It only takes 15-20 minutes of face and arms exposure to the sun 3 times a week for your body to naturally produce enough Vitamin D. I live in a perpetually cloudy area of the world so finding much sunshine in the winter is very difficult.

The public health up here has it as part of their recommendations to encourage an intake of 1000 IU of Vitamin D (for adults). We get 400iu from a multivitamin, plus another 400iu from a vit d tab and make up the rest in our diet.

That's great, Moe! Are you in Canada? Here in the U.S., they are still telling us to cover up and take 400 IU. Now that the studies are getting out into the mainstream, though, I believe that will change in the near future.

Okay, the above was suggested by my Rheumtalogist.
