With teenagers, if it keeps them out of trouble, whatever. I'm used to seeing youngsters hanging out at the Barnes and Noble Starbucks and they're all under control.

But little kids, ack, NO! I don't want children in any of my coffee shops or bookstores (around here, those two can go hand in hand). I like to read in coffee shops and bookstores are my sanctuary.

Ingilbert, I think you have a great point about obesity- even Starbucks recognized this at first, but seem to either have a lot of opposition and/or another marketing tool to make them more money. Perhaps that's cynical, but hey, they're a corporation.

I tend to be liberal and maybe even a bit liberatarian in my views, but I propose that coffee shops should not sell coffee to children under a certain age. With the [censored] poor diet that the typical American has, people wonder why there is a rampant amount of ADD?? Have they thought maybe processed sugars, caffiene and metal poisoning being an issue? Hmmmm....

Sorry, bit of a rant there, LOL!

Because there's MONEY in it, silly. They know that parents will fork out stupid amounts for things their little darlings want, so let's make sure that includes our stuff, capiche?

I thought they were supposed to be cracking down on the deliberate targeting of children with unhealthy food? Apparently not - or maybe it's OK as long as it's not on television.

And as for how great a job most parents do with their kids nutrition - DON'T get me started...

When most parents feed their kids fast food several times a week, why would they think there's something wrong with giving them coffee and soda?

If they ever looked into the ingredients of fast food and what they did to growing bodies, they might think twice. Or then again, maybe not.

My niece's 3 year old eats fast food several times a week and drinks Yahoo for all dinners. She had trouble getting him to eat when he was younger so she figured anything he'd eat was better than nothing. The fast food is just convenience. At my house tho he at least gets fruit and real milk.

You're right Ingilbert, parents are teaching their kids habits that will last a lifetime. For the first time in our history, the average lifespan is decreasing, instead of increasing.

For those without kids, it still affects you as your taxes and insurance costs will be going to support all the medical needs of those who eat poorly and are overweight and unhealthy.

Sorry for the soapbox! However, I see healthy eating as the one thing we can do to insure a healthy life and a healthy old age.

Here is a positive article about healthy, active kids. I think all of you will enjoy reading this article, especially those of who are teachers or work with kids in some way.

I'm wondering what someone's allowance is if teen's are hanging out at Starbucks and can afford $3 for a frothy coffee. I know I wouldn't have been able to afford expensive, "designer" coffee when I was a teenager. I actually resent spending that much on coffee now. For me, it's an occasional treat b/c it is *so* fattening and expensive. I think coffee shops and bookstores are a better hang out than most places, but they need to open coffee shops and bookstores for minors, then. Give the adults a place where they can be adults.

Angela P...I can see them trying it...nothing is sacred anymore.

Happytobechildfree...I agree with you, I never had enough money at that age to buy anything that expensive. Can you imagine the uproar if we started a childfree chain of bookstores with coffeee shops and bakeries inside. We would never hear the end of it. But they can shove the neighborhood Chuck E. Cheese down our throats and we are supposed to grin and bear it.
