Actually, one of the best beach experiences I've had was with my last vacation a week ago -- a lakeside hotel room that walked out onto the beach in St Ignace/Mackinaw City, MI. There was a wall separating the rooms on the first floor, where you could just sit outside, watch the sun rise, enjoy the gulls, watch the ferries go by, etc for hours. It was like you had your own little perfect slice of privacy on a public beach. Amazingly enough, the beaches on Muskegon, MI seemed to be adult only, with very few kids when we've sat down and taken pictures/taken in the sights in the evening (btw, Muskegon is where the picture in my Avatar is from). I guess we found the right beaches to go to be away from them kids

Back when multiple kids were needed to work on the farm, do you think those kids were being pampered? NO. My grandma was the youngest of 8 on a farm, and she was left in the care of two brothers. She did chores like everyone else, albeit littler chores. But we are doing her memoirs right now, and she is telling me how she was expected to be on her own and take care of herself if her brothers weren't around. And she was five or six.
Nowadays kids aren't being left on their own until they are 13 or 14. I was BABYSITTING at 11! I rode my bike once a week over a mile for piano lessons. I went everywhere on my own. I had a friend in junior high who lived about 3 miles from me, and we rode our bikes to each other's houses. Most kids aren't allowed to even walk to school at that age now!
Grr.
My point is, it was different for people to have multiple kids even 80 years ago. In this day and time, it really is unreasonable to have more than 2 children, 3 should be the most. Otherwise, it becomes way too expensive, and way too difficult to coordinate schedules, and certainly too hard to discipline them.

It would be nice if they offered childfree sections at restaraunts. On Saturday night we were at a nice little Italian place in our town. Sat in a corner booth and were quite happy. Then the family from hell sat next to us. First problem, they locked their keys in their car and proceded to talk (loudly) into the cell phone to get someone to come jimmy it open (several phone calls) instead of just calling a lock smith.
Then, the kids went demon spawn.
I have no tolerance for other people's ill behaved children. They were horribly loud (I had to say "I'm sorry honey, I can't hear you, what did you say" quite loudly.) Then they started crawling on the seat, actually leaning over our booth and looking at us. The awful parents paid no mind really, except the meek "don't do that" response (which doesn't work, give these kids a spanking!!)
I actually turned around and told the little brats to SIT down. What does there mom do? Oh nothing really. Except the occasional, "sit down so you don't bother the nice lady" nice lady my butt. I'm sure she was pretty offended I told her kids to behave.
If we hadn't been 3/4 through our lasagna, I would have asked to be moved. It really ruined our evening and I'm not sure when I want to go back there, just from the experience. At least for a while.

I am willing to bet that if these "kidfree" zones make it to see the light of day, it will be PARENTS that are making up the majority of the adults in these kidfree zones. Besides, they would (in my opinion) appreciate the kidfreeness the most. I called my expectant friend that has a toddler and the child just screamed the entire time....Oh, I felt so bad for her b/c she is due in about 2 weeks and she has a toddler too. She and her husband would be two people that I can think of that would (or might) enjoy a kidfree zone after a day listening to two screaming children.

I completely agree, dst, if they take off I bet parents will be using them at least as much as the CF. Hopefully if that becomes common we won't start to get people trying to get by with "just this once" or "just for a second" taking their kids in...

There are getting to be a few more "adults only" vacations out there. Sandals, certain resorts in the Poconos, and some others I noticed in Cancun (well, they had them a few years ago)...but not nearly enough.
I'm so sick of hearing about "kids' rights!" What ever happened to common courtesy?

That sounds really annoying. I think Mike said, a while back, that taking a vacation with kids is an oxymoron. LOL. It really isn't a vacation. My family is going away this weekend, and my parents take my 7 year old nephew every year. I can usually last for about 3 days, and then I have to get out of there. The house is too small, and my nephew has a tantrum, or doesn't listen, and my Dad starts yelling. Not relaxing at all!
Save your own life - don't have kids!

OMG that has got to be one of the saddest things I have ever read.
Although, it did occur to me, the author says he and his daughter have been going on these trips "since her infancy". Um, so it's ok to have YOUR kid there? Jeez.
Btw, the place we went to for our Kauai honeymoon had several pools, and one was adults-only. There was one day a mom brought her 2 kids into the "adult" pool, but fortunately it only happened once. The rest of the time it was a great system. Quiet and alcohol served in one area, noise, slides and Cokes in the other. Yay!
