GMA had a story on this morning about a new trend...Kid Free Zones! Imagine that! You can see or read about it on their website. I don't have the address off hand, but it's the abc news website.

I think it's a great idea! I wish more places would do this. I read some of the comments and someone did the whole, "it takes a village " [censored]. If my husband and I do have kids someday, HE and I will raise them. Not an entire village, WE will.

OK, I just went over to abc news website and read the article. Pretty good, but brief. However, the comments people posted, were pretty good. Last time I checked, there were 187 comments and counting and I would say 85-90% are for kid-free zones. And a lot of those who would like that are parents themselves. Interesting, huh? Thanks yehonala for the info! Jenny

I saw that segment this morning and they said it was a new series. The weather person Marisol is doing the segment tomorrow on mothers and breastfeeding in public.

I saw the end of a similar story this morning on the Today show. Did anyone see the whole thing? The end irritated me. It first showed an older man saying something about how he'd hate to see society split in that way (adult only restaurants, beaches, etc.), and then they flashed to a person alone on an adults only beach and the announcer said something about how lonely it was. I felt that the show was making editorial comments about the choice to be childfree (and how undesireable it is - look, that poor, childless person is alone on the beach!). It made me wonder if they went to the beach for that shot at 7 o'clock in the morning so they could make their point. Again, I just caught the end of this, so maybe the whole story was actually more balanced.

To me being alone on the beach is a good thing!

EXACTLY! Maybe they WANT to be alone at that particular moment! For all they know it might be a mum of lots of kids who NEEDED - and somehow got - a break!
Or a childfree enjoying the bliss of being able to just up and go off to the beach without needing a sitter!
I LOVE walking in the park and the quieter it is the better. It is theraputic for me. I love walking with my husband in the park but I also love walking alone. I do both for different needs and reasons.

I leave the child-rearing to people who feel called to it. I've never felt that call.

I rarely get to go to the beach (I'm in the Midwest) and would be thrilled to have one all to myself. I don't think the extreme extroverts can comprehend how some of us can experience happiness while alone. Alone and lonely are not one and the same.

I consider the ability to enjoy one's own company to be a significant blessing. I'm very glad it was given to me.

That's interesting. I really do think it takes a village. And the fact that I knew I would NEVER have a village is one of the early things that made me think that having children was not for me.

I never had a babysitter outside of the family. EVER. My parents are both pretty messed up. If I hadn't had grandparents, aunts and uncles, and my church to help shape me, I know I wouldn't be the persona I am today. People always tell me, we don't know how you turned out so well. It's such a bitter sweet compliment.

Anyways, that aside. I totally dig the idea of cf zones, and I'd love to see the advent of child free days at major attractions. I'd like to see a child free weekend at Disney, Six Flags, the zoo etc. Places that are child oriented, but adults would like to go to. And it's not even that I would feel like I needed to stick to childfree days only, but it would be nice to have the option.
