Legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick certainly believed this, as evidenced by this quote from a 1968 interview he gave in “Playboy” magazine. Kubrick (who made “2001,” “The Shining,” and other classics) argued that any meaning in life must be created by ourselves, and once we accept this responsibility, we can “forge a fresh sense of purpose and affirmation.” When we accept the challenges and limitations of life, he said, “our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment.”
