Hello everyone – here’s to success in your container gardening whatever you are doing.

One of my favourite vegetables are potatoes, they are so versatile when it comes to preparing them and they complement the family table in a big way … roasted, boiled with butter and garlic, salady with mayonnaise, smashed or mashed … not to mention crisps and chips and fish and all.

They are really easy to grow and do well in pots. Often I hear that people don’t really want to grow vegetables in containers because there’s so little to harvest – once harvested that’s it and the time growing whatever takes much longer than eating the whatever. Not so with potatoes – you can really get value for your efforts here.

It seems that no-one is interested in growing potatoes in pots? Are you one of them?

Please let me know why if so ...
no space,
no pots,
no interest,
your neighbour gives you all you need,
subject just not sexy enough,
potato prices are low enough to buy them,
add butter so taste not really a factor ...
add your own!

Ah well. Guess I just love unpacking my potatoes and starting all over again to enjoy this as an on-going vegetable container project in my life. It is also one of the ways that growing vegetables in containers give a fair return on effort (like beans an tomatoes).

Lestie, I have a pot that is almost 3 feet high and 3 feet in diameter that is filled with potatoes and one lonely sweet potato. Looking forward to a nice harvest. If I plant garden potatoes, I always plant them in straw in a raised bed, since Kansas dirt is mainly clay.

Thing with sweet potatoes is that they spread and take up space that people with container gardening in mind don't always have. Still, tell me more about straw growing? How? What? Where? Harvesting? Is there any soil involved? Watering, does it just run off?
