An American newspaper reported:
In the year 1831, the King of Denmark announced his purpose to award a gold medal of the value of twenty ducats to the person who should first discover a telescopic comet.
On the 1st of October, 1847 Miss Maria Michell, of Nantucket, a scientific American woman, discovered, at half past ten P.M., such a comet; which was seen on the 3d of October at Rome, by Father De Vico, on the 7th in England, by W.R. Dawes, and on the 11th at Hamburgh, by the wife of the director of the observatory of that city. Of course, our fair countrywoman has carried off the prize.
A bit patronizing, but I suppose fairly generous for the time. Points for describing Maria Mitchell is "a scientific American woman", but might have to deduct some for "our fair countrywoman".
