Birthdays are great opportunities to celebrate and honor ourselves and the ones we love. Celebrate your birthday in the way that fits you best.

This year I did not celebrate my birthday, the first time in my entire life. I lost my boyfriend 5 months prior to my birthday and I did not feel like celebrating. I still live next door to his parents and there were some health issues going on with them at the time. I never mentioned a thing to them or anyone else. My family called me because they live out of state, but nobody I talk to around here had any idea. It was just another day, really.

Maybe next year I will take some of your great suggestions and do something special for myself.

Jennie - that sounds wonderful and relaxing.

Debbie - celebrating after the loss of the person we likely would most want to spend our birthdays with can be a challenge. Moving back into the habit slowly, through gratitude, can help. You mention this loss a lot. Perhaps what would suit you would be a celebration of his birthday where you can express gratitude for the time you had together, and the deep love you were gifted with experiencing. A celebration like that would be a great opportunity to bless his new travels, and, in so doing, make peace with your own.

Veda.....I mention the loss often because it is still so very fresh to me, and it is something I deal with every single day. Talking about it helps a lot. Grief is a hard road that can be made easier with the support of others, and everyone here has been very kind.

I intend to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday in my own personal way next month when the time comes. There is indeed a lot to celebrate when I think of him and what we shared.

But I also agree with Debbie, if it is so fresh then it would be difficult for anyone to celebrate the birthday after that type of loss.

Debbie, thank you for continuing to share and process your grief with all of us. I believe it very important to express the emotions we hold within our corporeal frames. I am glad to hear you have a celebration planned. I find celebrating to be an important part of any grieving process.
