This happens because of our laziness. We must be responsible for our account.

I don't think there is any laziness on the part of users here as long as they update their account(s) when notification of a breach of security has taken place.

However, I think that any company that collects data (and in particular one that does charge fees for a number of services like LinkedIn), the onus is on them to ensure proper security measures are being employed.

That's part of it, but then there is also phishing. I get at least 5-10 phishing emails on my corporate email account, suggesting that my "PayPal account has been limited" or that my Wells Fargo account "has been compromised", asking me to click on a link and "log in" to my account. Those who click on the link and provide their login info are often the ones whose accounts get compromised.

Good point. I never click a link in an email. I will go directly to the site on my own and see that my account is okay. Then I research on their site who to send the phishing email to for their review.

It is happening more frequently but in some of these cases, it is the system of Linkedin or Yahoo or whatever that gets hacked rather than the individual. Individuals get hacked also. Hackers are working overtime to stay ahead of the security systems.
