I don't know of anyone who wears their rings after a divorce, but like Vance and Elleise said, it is really personal preference, and if you have rings with stones in them you could always have the settings changed.

Vance was right in that you will only get a small fraction of what you paid for them if you sell them to a jewelry store or pawn shop. Both types of stores will offer you comparable compensation for your rings, as I have found out by checking with both. But if you choose at least three places to inquire at you will hopefully find one store that will give you just a little bit more money than the other stores.

I wound up selling at a pawn shop. They offered me the best price for my wedding bands, and I checked with two other pawn shops and some jewelry stores as well. The price of gold is up now too, so if your rings are gold now is a good time to sell. I put my wedding bands up for sale on ebay before I sold them locally, but I had no luck on ebay.

I really would have preferred to keep my wedding bands, but I was forced to sell them due to my financial circumstances. I still have my diamond engagement ring because it is a marquis cut stone. Supposedly that cut is not popular anymore. I think my ring is gorgeous and a jeweler told me after examining it that the diamond is good quality, but nobody will buy the ring from me, so it just sits in my jewelry box now.

Thanks for the info Cassie. I wonder if you could sell the diamond removed from the ring, and sell the gold band then for scrap?

I have to keep the main diamond from the wedding ring since it was my mom's diamond, but the setting I suppose I could resell. it has six other smaller diamonds in the setting and is made of yellow gold.

The engagement ring is actually just a small anniversary band made of white and yellow gold with tiny diamond baguettes. I might be able to get away with wearing that one as just a 'ring.'

My promise ring is Galadriel's ring from Lord of the Rings, so I can possibly sell that to a fansite or something. The ring I gave dan for the wedding is Aragorn's ring, also from LOTR, and he allowed me to take that back (he doesn't like jewelry). So maybe I could sell those as a set.

This is great, funny kind of...

O.k., I did (wear the rings afterwards)!

In one, the setting had been changed. It was more a healing process and creating something good out of something not so good.

The other, well, it would absolutely come in handy when I didn't want to be bothered by a suitor going out or actually got to the point where I could see myself with a partner that I had yet to meet.

These days, it seems whether you're married or not you can get approached, but if you're wearing a ring and act attached to it, at a table or in line, I noticed people left me alone.

I guess you could say I removed any sentimentality I had once upon a time to the rings. In general I wouldn't wear them on my left hand though.

Oh, and appraisals? Usually they're free and you can get them from a jewelry store. They're usually happy to give you one, as the value they're hoping you'll buy something or trade it for a discount on something they're selling.

If you do go to a jewelers, go in w/confidence, like the sunglasses and that you're there for business purposes, not desperate. I'd go in for an appraisal and just by feeling the place out, would leave and wait a week or so because it felt like I'd get a low-ball appraisal.

Mom and pop shops are best. Pawn shops I'd never go there unless I needed food and had no hopes whatsoever being dealt with straight up. Actually I see really good things 4 you - goosebumps and everything wink

I am very sorry for your pain. When I got divorced, it was a LONG time coming and it was a huge relief for me. I kept my ex's wedding band and my rings. I sold his a few years ago with some other old jewelry. As for my rings, it's your traditoinal center diamond with baguettes and the wedding band has rubies and diamonds in it. I tried selling them but what I'd get for them is a joke, even with the appraisal and grading certificates. My husband and I have agreed that selling the gold and getting the stones set into a pendant would be an ok idea, he's actually ok with it, he knows it's just stones at this point. I also have 2 diamonds from my grandmother that I'd like to incorporate into the design. Maybe one day for a special occasion as custom made things aren't cheap..... LOL

I lucked out in that the pawn shops here are of decent quality. I would have preferred to deal with the jewelers I had inquired with, but they did not give me the best price for my wedding bands. A pawn shop here did, and they have done that for me more than once in the past with scrap gold I have had to sell. Money is money, and the extra $50 they gave me for the wedding bands, as opposed to the best price a jeweler offered me, sure came in handy.

It all depends on what the store will do with the rings. If they will melt them down they will offer you less. If they can sell them outright they will offer you more.

Jilly....How neat to have had the LOTR rings. I bet you could easily sell those as a set on ebay or another such channel. Those would sell well, I would think.

My ex-husband bought the "Precious" gold ring from LOTR just to have as a keepsake. He never wore it but liked admiring it.

I love those movies. Aragorn was quite the hottie.... Ok, I have digressed here.....
