I'm pretty worried about Pinky Pescado, I got him last spring. He had a bout of fin rot, and I wasn't aggressive enough treating it. So, I looked at him the other day and saw that his fin rot seems to have invaded his body. His fins didn't ever turn red, but they fell off in little bits and pieces. He was active, always ate, and didn't seem to be in distress. I put him in a hospital tank with salt and bettafix, and now there's some clearish stuff floating on the very end of his body, I can't tell if it's more of the growth or if his body is trying to regrow his fins. He seems in good spirits, is active in the little bowl and eats everything I give him (one or two pellets per day). He had some bloodred spots on the top of his head, and those are looking better.

I don't want to lose my Pinky boy!

I found this link to Betta Talk

http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm

And though his fins aren't in as advanced a state as the photo shows in advanced fin rot, the black stuff on his body is bigger. Is anyone familiar with the medicine he recommends? I'm currently using salt, bettafix and clean water w/o gravel to try to get him better. Help!

i have been using maracynby mardel and nebbie is clearing up miraculously. he only has a few little spots on him. i think i am going to follow up with maracyn-two, which is like a supplemental medicine, in case the maracyn didnt get all of it. the good thing is that you can keep your filter in and you dont have to change the water every day. the jungle fizzers i got did not work at all. i think his fin is even growing back! it wasnt bad, thank goodness, but if i wouldnt have noticed, it could be bad.
i would try it, there are even other medicines (copper safe is the one they reccommend to use with maracyn) to use with it as a supplement. each tablet treatsd 10 gal and i have a 3 gal tank, so i just split up the tabs by breaking them. if you have less than 1 gal, i would crush up the tablet and add some, measuring with your eye.

Nann, when I treat my fish with bettafix they always get some cottony stuff floating around in the water. I don't know exactly what it is but I always syphon it out when I see it. I don't think it's anything harmful though.

You can try to continue with the treatment that you are giving him as long as he seems well and is eating and the issues seem to be healing...or...if that black stuff on him seems ominous, you may want to try a stronger med while he is still strong. I have heard that "jungle Fungus Eliminator" is pretty good stuff, though I have never used it myself.

I do hope he continues to do well and that the black stuff on him turns out to be nothing to worry about..let us know

Emg,

I used the Jungle Fungus Eliminator on Frazz and he got better, then suddenly died. I'm worried about losing Pinky. He's such a cool fish, plus he was the daddy of my short lived spawn. He's eating ok, active in the little hospital bowl, but yikes, that black stuff looks evil. The clear stuff is actually attached to him, although there has been floating stuff as well. I'm trying not to fuss with him too much, just siphoning the icky stuff out, and adding more betta fix every day.

Thanks I appreciate the condolences. It's hard to not see him in the morning and evening when I get home.
