Very interesting topic ... My SO and I live in a one bedroom, plus den condo and we love it. It's just the right size for us, within our budget, in a safe neighbourhood and ... this is my favourite part ... it takes me only around an hour to clean the entire place 'till it shines ... maybe two if I really want to see it sparkle! We have friends that like to crash at our place while visiting from out of town, or friends that we won't let go home after a good long visit and too many drinks ... people were asking if we would move to a house or get a larger appartment (this question became more prevalent after the SO got a better job). Our response? We bought a sofabed :) I have a friend who is bound and determined to get a two-car garage, corner lot, home. I know that I do not need that but I can see that is it something that she needs to feel accomplished. She is working hard to achieve this so I say good for her. As Gaynor said, it goes back to others pushing their opinions on you ... whatever your living arrangements, if you like it, good for you!! (That was kind of a pointless post, but I wanted to jump in here and share :))

Liney, it wasn't pointless. It's actually good to know there's someone else like me out there! To each their own, but sadly many couples purchased homes that required to full time incomes , or lied about incomes ( how anyone thought they could lie about income and not lose their house is beyond me.) Who knows!

We have a home based business that takes up several rooms, and can operate it from anywhere so when it came time to buy a house we chose a more rural low wage state where our home buying dollars went much farther than where we came from. We actually use the space in our large house. But it was inexpensive, perhaps 1/10 the price of a similar home in our original home state.

With all due love and respect to your family members - the only solution I found is to move 700 miles away. I know that sounds cold, but it really is the only solution IMHO.

I find saying outrageous and offensive things is a good way to keep people from ever even attempting to broach the subject again.

For example, my sister just had a baby, and I made the mistake of mentioning in the presence of my father's very rude, uncouth wife that the kid was a pretty good baby (as far as babies go). She replied, "See, you like kids. I bet you'll change your mind soon and get your tubes untied." I replied, "No, I assure you, nothing will EVER make it out of my [censored] alive."

See? I referenced abortion and my [censored] in one sentence. She shut up immediately. She's pretty much the worst person I know, so it may not hold her forever. But, it should last a while.

That works for me anyway. I wish you luck!

-D.

**edit** Really? This site censors the correct, medical terminology for a woman's reproductive structure? What do you want me to call it, "The Birth Canal?" I'm not calling it that on a childfree forum! ARG.

Sam B., I always say the same thing...if ther person is not carrying, birthing, raising, and putting said child through college they have no say. I find the best way to handle it is like this, "You know that's really personal and not something open for discussion; please respect that as I would always respect things you dont feel comfortable discussing." If not, Change the subject or walk away.

DOLYN, HAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG. I can't believe the nerve of this woman. You certainly put her in her place.

I laughed so hard at that part of her post. Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice. This community out here is pretty pro-natal just like my church community. Next time I'll have to try something like one of the comments you guys made. Also, someone told me to move seven hundred miles away. Ahem...I already implemented that technique by moving 3,000 miles away from that pro-natal community. It's really nice to be around so many people who don't want children for a change.
