One of the primary reasons why so many people avoid workouts or exercise is their workout routine is just boring.

Same exercises, same sets, reps, and type of weight or machines. It's so predictable and after a while your body plateaus from lack of stimulation so your brain checks out and says what's the point. Why continue with something that is getting you nowhere.

Our bodies are not designed for boring repetitive motion so the more dynamic your workouts and exercise plan the more likely you will be to stick to it long term. That means changing things around at least every 2-3 weeks. This takes some planning but after a while it just becomes second nature.

Say no to boring exercise that lead to plateaus and get busy with fun workouts fun exercise.

I agree, making it fun makes a big difference. My husband got me a Wii for Christmas and ever since I've been exercising a lot. I particularly like EA Sports Active and Walk It Out. I've actually been having to force myself to take rest days!

Before when I started an exercise program, I would overdo it on day one and would be too sore to keep it up. Now I work through the pain. Plus finding the fine line of a good workout and overdoing it.

Great point Dianne. I think overdoing it is definitely a reason some of my clients avoid exercise. Some of them go at it really hard usually because they feel guilty about something they ate then they're so sore or in pain for days and they can't even move.

Sometimes people go too hard because they don't evaluate where they're at from the start. This happens to more experienced exercisers who are in the intermediate range but are dying to do more advanced workouts.

Another reason that I see a lot is workouts are too long. This used to be a big problem for me many years ago. 90 minutes at the gym is not necessary unless you're a professional bodybuilder. These days my workouts are around 25 min. long and this makes it easier to do it daily which is key to maintaining a high metabolism.

Finding that fine line is hard no matter where you're at with your fitness. Definitely something to write about D. Thanks for the idea.

True, lots of people avoid exercise because of mobility issues or pain but those machines you listed only contribute to faulty movement patterns, poor posture, and complex pain syndromes.

I specialize in training clients with mobility issues and can tell you from years of experience and study (I have a handful of certifications in corrective exercise too) that restoring function is not accomplished with cheap exercise gadgets like the ones you listed.

It's dangerous for you to make such a recommendation unless you're some kind of kinesiology expert, or certified in corrective exercise or functional exercise or are a licensed physical therapist or movement specialist.

The 3 things people with mobility issues need are:

1. the desire to exercise and heal their bodies

2. proper bodyweight exercises prescribed by a professional with knowledge of corrective exercise or rehab

3. about 15-30 minutes a day

Even if people don't have time or desire but want to turn things around, the most important thing they can do is seek help from a professional instead of take chances and risk getting injured.

About the only equipment corrective trainers rely on is resistance bands.

Great point! I use Wii Fit to try and stay in shape, and it's always fun.

Here is a site with a video that shows adults trying to stay active by adding a little pizazz to their daily activities.
It's pretty funny:)

Active Adults

It's part of a campaign we are running at the marketing company i work for. It's a project with the Arthritis Foundation and the Ad Council that's trying to spread awareness that staying active is useful for the treatment of Osteoarthritis as well as just being great in general.

That is too cool. I hear they're using the Wii Fit in physical therapy setting to and also with certain kid populations.

Definitely a great tool to help people get active or get them motivated to get up and get moving.

I don't think the Wii will help you shed massive pounds or get ripped but it's a good supplement to an existing weightloss and exercise program.
