While I do feel that perhaps my writing may have been misread a little, I do agree. I also suffer from depression. I do not take lightly the condition and never will I say it doesnt exist. I know for sure that it does and as a trained counselour and currently a training Psychotherapist, I feel that with therapy and perhaps a combination of drug therapies as well, that depression can be managed. But for people living with no form of spiritual support nor belief in a higher form, humans, as a race, we start to falter. There are so many superficial things to beleive in out there: Makeup, celebrities, plastic surgeries to beautify the outside, that we forget that there is a natural support network out there to help us believe in ourselves. We just need to connect to it..

Very good thoughts, zshar-ptitsa. Depression can be managed with the proper meds and therapy. I also agree with you on the importance of spiritual support and connecting to it.

I remember a few different lifetimes I've had. But this usually makes no sense to anyone else. Only to me, because they're my own experiences. They all came to me when I needed help desperately, because I was deeply concerned with some problems that I could find no cause for in this lifetime. So I decided that perhaps they might stem from a former lifetime. And I kept using my intuition to "feel" my way, asking myself question after question - was I male? Was I female? Was it Greece? Was it Egypt? Etc. And I kept asking day after day for about a week, until an inner feeling of certainty came to me and I remembered a situation from a past life. And it helped me to resolve a problem I was going through.

I have a friend who would go to sleep each night and remember a past life. She said it was like entering a foot locker, stepping through, and then re-living experiences. But one night, as she went to sleep, she saw two foot lockers, and didn't know which one to step through. She started toward one, and then there was a whole row of foot lockers. She got the point - these experiences are only useful if they help you NOW. And living in the NOW is way more useful than re-living something from the past, unless it's a lesson you need to learn right now that will help.

I'm sorry for jumping on you like that - and I get what you are saying now - and I do agree.

having a spriritual life does help - I don't know where my hope would lie if I didn't have my spirituality to turn to.

EXACTLY! Some people are so caught up in their past lives and trying to MAKE them fit in with what is happening now, that they forget to live for today.

Learn from the past, but live for the moment.

This may be an entirely different thread, but the discussion on depression here reminded me of an article I recently read about the different types of depression, and distinguishing clinical depression from a 'dark night of the soul' - a spiritual crises that occurs for many people at some point in their spiritual journey. I do think the idea of a 'dark night' resonates for many people, including me - a period in which prior beliefs no longer seem to 'fit' and there is a feeling of loss and bewilderment before we 'grow into' our new self (that's a pretty brief explanation, but hopefully you already know what I mean.)

Michelle, have you written on 'dark nights of the soul'? Do you see this as fundamentally different from clinical, recurring depression? I do, and would be interesting in hearing your thoughts on the matter...

Sorry for getting this thread off-track!!
