I missed the part about teaching someone to crochet. The same aunt who taught me to knit was asked by my sister to teach her to crochet. My aunt said it was impossible. You see my sister is left handed while me and my aunt are right handed. Sis was told that she would never be able to learn. Wrong.

I found out that she wanted to learn and started to try to teach her. It was slow at first till we figured out that if she sits directly in front of me then she sees exactly as she would be crocheting.

Now she crochets every day and has for many years.

After learning how to crochet she had another visit to our aunts house. My aunt was shocked when she saw my sister crocheting, and asked where she found someone left handed to teach her. My sister then said Mary did it and my aunt had to be told how the impossible became possible.

To me this is one of the best things I have ever done. You see my sister has a disease that prevents her from driving. She is stuck at home till someone has time to take her places. That is rare with jobs and lives. She does not live where she can simply walk to town, and there are no such things as buses.

So crochet is a huge part of her life and she might be slow, but she gets the job done.

Another success is teaching my unteachable daughter. I tried, really I did. Didn't work. So a few years ago I taught her to loom knit. She did a baby afghan and wanted to edge it in crochet. So again we worked on that and finally she got it.

Now she doesn't loom knit anymore but after that beginning crochet start and a little extra help she bloomed and does and excellent job all on her own.

I passed the skill along and now she is thinking, hum, knitting. I love it.

Hi, I am new to Bella Online and this is my first posting. My mom taught me how to crochet when I was 5. I started designing my own clothes by the time I was twelve. In those 7 years in between my aunt taught me how to sew. I took to sewing and making clothes like a fish takes to water. By the time I was 14 I was making sweaters for my friends and even entered contests in the local yarn shops. I began selling my clothing at the age of 16. I loved to crochet. I am never without a project. This last winter I had the opportunity to teach a group of ladies from my church how to crochet. It was a lot of fun. We made a scarf that I designed. I call it the split scarf. Thanks for letting me share my crochet experience with you all. Laura

I started crocheting in the summer of 1978 when I was almost ten. One boring summer day, I was poking around in my stepmom's sewing basket and found a ball of yarn, a crochet hook, and a book called "Learn to Crochet". I remember that the cover of the instruction book was a bright avocado green. Ah, the 70s.

Over the next several years, I made afghans for a number of family members. My grandmother still has the one that I made for her in the early 80s.

I love the intricacy of doilies, though they do not fit in with my decorating style. So, I satisfy my doily urge by making crocheted ornament covers each year for gifts.

Most recently, I made a ripple baby blanket in white, pink and lavender for my nephew's baby.

I find crocheting to be very therapeutic and calming. :-)

I quit smoking 13 years ago and went to some classes to help me..One of the suggetions was to find something to do with your hands....I knew how to chain stitch, but that was all..SO, I got a beginners crochet book and with the help of a few friends and family I have been crocheting ever since...I am mostly self taught and struggle at times but I really enjoy it and have passed the suggestion on to other's who are trying to quit smoking.....Another friend suggested I find a forum to help me out and I landed here.. I am really excited to have people to share with and get help from.....

I started living on my own when i was 19 and was so bored that i went to the store and bought me one of those lap looms and started making a baby blanket but got discouraged because of having to make so many squares and then putting them together. So i gave up then when i got married my grandmother in law gave us an afghan and i loved the design so i decided to give it a try though the only sticth i knew was the dc i took me a while but i was able to finish a baby blanket in like 3 wks then i gave up and went back to my books. But for the last year i've been trying to quit smoking so i keep my hands busy i bought a baby crochet book and have been trying to do hats for my upcoming nephew or niece...it relaxing but i get distracted easily. My sister is pregnant and stays home all day and when she saw the hat i was trying to make she decided to try crocheting so i bought her the "I taught myself to crochet" book and she picked it up really fast (2 days) now she's making scarves and blankets alot faster than i do them

From the time I was a teenager crochet fascinated me. Anytime I saw someone crocheting, I would just stare at them. I told my self that this is one craft I wanted to learn. A few years ago my husband (now my Ex)visted a friend and his wife. A few other friends were there and I saw two of my friends crocheting. Although I knew that they could crochet I had never asked them to show me how. This particular day I sat down and they showed me a few stiches. After that I bought a few books and started on my journey. I later found out that a cousin of mine is involved in crochet and that has made the world of differnce. We exchange patterns and she helps me with some of the work. I have made name doilies and chair sets for friends and of course I have sold some of them. I have started my own crochet business and this month will be registering it. I thank my two friends who showed me how and also my cousin who has been a great source of help.
