For an entire list of all celebrities and the charitable work they have done, check out this really cool and informative website, Look to the Stars:
Look to the StarsI think that most celebrities are giving back in some way, whether we know about it or not. They frequently give large cash contributions, or support charities they are passionate about. Many go so far as to start their own charities -- Michael Jackson, Lance Armstrong, Oprah Winfrey, Paul Newman (Newmans' Own, anyone?), Elton John, and Kevin Bacon are just a few. Even young stars are getting involved, like Rihanna, who started The Believe Foundation to help terminally ill children. And, there are many celebrities who give huge amounts and deny any publicity, like Bruce Springsteen. The only people who know about his charitable givings are the ones who have benefitted directly.
Either way, I think the real celebrities are the average Joes who are giving back. Many people who volunteer their time or money have the time or money to give, but many more do not. Many people give knowing they, too, could use some help. And they don't get the credit the way the celebrities do. That's why I like volunteer awards programs, like CNN's Everyday Heroes program or The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for young volunteers. If you know someone who can inspire others through their volunteer and charitable acts, why not nominate them so others can be inspired too?
