Well Ryan never responded to my second message asking for more details. So apparently he's embarrassed about what happened and just doesn't want to really talk about it. Which is a shame, but understandable.
It definitely sounds like for him that it was about the money and not about the life change - and that once he got the money he went back to his old lifestyle. I think they do a much better job in current shows with the "figuring out how they got there" to handle that underlying problem - which makes it much more likely that the person will eat more healthily going forward.

I have a sister-in-law who bought bowflex, changed her diet and looks great. She is the healthiest i've ever seen her. The weight resistance training has really helped her with the back problem she got from a car accident. Most people just want to complain rather than take ACTION to solve their health problems.

This is a tough topic, though. I certainly agree that some people get into a habit of complaining rather than taking action. It is easier to complain that their genetics have doomed them, and keep eating ice cream, vs changing your diet and doing exercise. So that is a portion of the people.
However, I have to say there is another large portion of the people who honestly DO want to be more healthy and who do not sit around complaining. They try to eat healthy foods and they try to exercise. The problem is that nobody helps them learn to do these things properly. So they eat a lot of pasta and sauce thinking it is "healthy" compared with say a Big Mac and Fries. They think they *are* eating healthy. They know they should exercise so they walk a 1/4 mile a day. They feel that is exercise. Then they get frustrated that their work is not yielding any results, and it makes them depressed.
So yes I agree that some portion of people are doing deliberately bad things, complaining that they are "stuck" and do not make progress when they could be. But I also think that that is a minority of people. I think for most people they have the desire, but not the knowledge of how to change healthily.
Also, to be fair, a Bowflex is NOT inexpensive. So many people who would *love* to have a Bowflex (or other expensive equipment) simply cannot afford it. So they do the best with what they can have.

That's too bad about Ryan, Lisa, but it's probably accurate that he feels pretty poorly about himself and his choices. What a bummer.

Yep Bowflex isn't cheap. However, resistance bands are pretty much the same thing, and ARE cheap. With that, a few small hand weights or medicine ball, plus a stability ball, once can do all the same work for a tiny price. Also, I remember Biggest Loser Ali saying in an interview that at home she mostly relied on squats, back extensions, lunges, crunches and pushups. And all of that can be done for free!

I want to say that loosing any amount of weight and keeping it off is great.
I also want to say that if you have been significantly overweight your entire life and you have lost weight and gained it back a few times, you are very likely to have a "pouch" at even 110lbs. Your skin gets stretched to a point that it won't go back, it's no longer a fat issue.

LizzyAnn - if you watch the Biggest Loser you will see many people on that show who have been overweight much of their life and who have done yoyo dieting. At the end of the show they do NOT have a pouch. So it is based on proper diet and exercise. The thing is, again, that most normal people don't have access to that level of nutritionist and expert weight loss coach to help them get to that level.

I've never watched the biggest looser. Are there contestants on there that weigh as much as 450?

Yes for example Daniel Wright was on the Biggest Loser and he weighed 454 pounds. You should definitely watch a full DVD from start to end - it's very inspiring!

I think you make a great point but the truth is that people need to stop being lazy and expecting others to do everything for them. Most people have the brains to do their own research and to find a free diet and fitness plan that is sensible for their bodies and their lifesytle. Most people can afford a $40 ebook or a set of videos and most people can change the way they eat but they have to want to do it.
I've had clients who ate garbage for years and were so fat and they lost 70 pounds, 40 pounds, 30 pounds, and they've kept it off without my help. I was just their to offer a bit of guidance. It was really their own desire that got them the results.
There are tons of free programs online that really work. I write about them all the time. People need to stop blaming every body and start taking responsibility for what and how they eat and how much they move. It's that simple even for really obese people who claim "tried everything"
I may sound harsh but I have no sympathy for this type of mentality. If you want success you will do what it takes to achieve it.
Sorry guys but this is a big pet peeve of mine and I have to say how I feel because people need to hear the truth and not some watered down version of what so called experts tell them.
