My husband is mostly happy to be vegetarian at home but chooses meat if he wants it when we go out

That's how my husband is too. I gave up meat after college to try and eat healthier, then I got into animal rights and I've never regretted becoming a vegetarian. My only regret is not giving up meat sooner (although it will be 20 years this coming October).

My kids 6 and 9 have recently really become concerned with what they are eating and if it had to be killed. their lunches are vegetarian with lots of fruit, wraps and veggies. Imagine the surprise of the teachers to see most kids want to trade with my boys, so vegetarian is the way to go!

Amber,

This was a hard decision and it can be a struggle everyday. I read the book "Skinny [censored]" and there is a section in it that if you eat meat you will surely stop after that. It was so hard to read but I made myself. It is also a good book on nutrition. The title sounds strange but it was just to get people's attention.

Good luck with your decision and you can do this. I feel what is the difference in not eating my domestic dog for dinner? I know that sounds strange but really what is the difference? Most animals taken out of the farm and brought into our households are not different then those on the farm.

Linda McCartney said, "If slaughterhouses had glass wall there would be more vegetarians!"

If you look at our modern society it is really scary how few vegetables EVERYBODY eats. In modern times people eat processed food. For most people the only vegetable they eat is "the potato" and that's it.

I think they should do a "try a new vegetable every week" campaign and get people to ramp up their veggie intake!

Hello. I just found this forum and i think it's great that there's one for veges!

I became a vegetarian 32yrs ago,(economic and environmental reasons) and have been vegan for the past 5 (same reasons). I love it and have never been so healthy. All my food is prepared from scratch. I buy organic fruit, veges and legumes. I have a soy milk maker so make my own soy milk and tofu. I don't eat bread or any wheat products so I don't have to worry about that side of things.
Whilst I find being a vegan easy at home...going out and traveling is when it becomes difficult. Trying to find a dish that doesn't contain any animal products can be quite a challenge.
As a side effect of becoming a vegan I am symptom free of fibromyalgia, no longer have asthma and have far more energy!

Being a vegetarian when surrounded by people who eat meat is all about willpower. Show them that you intend to stick to your guns and gain their support.
