We have a lot of Victorians, Craftsmans, etc, where we live, so I like color variety too, but I don't think anyone likes overly bright colors.

A neighbor painted his house tan with chocolate brown trim. The door, shutters and mailbox are red. They also have red flowers trimming the meandering front walkway and in the planter in front of the house. It is gorgeous.

There's another house in the neighborhood that's an off white with slate blue and mauvish trims on it. It actually looks good because they chose the right shades and proportions of what they painted each color. A couple blocks away, someone tried to copy the look and it was awful. They didn't get the shades and proportions right. You need an artistic eye to play with color, I think.

On the black, I've seen a few houses pull off black on doors, shutters, trims, and mailboxes and it looks quite nice. I can't imagine in on the body of the house itself, though--and I like black a lot.

Our house is a very dark gray with bright white trim. We have stones (in shades of gray) on it (with black grout) and fence posts (with black wrought iron in between) made out of the same stone. The light fixtures, hardware, etc is all back. It looks really nice.

Cherry, your house sounds lovely. I have a penchant for black too.

I've seen an antique red on a house that I loved but a lot of people thought it was too much red (DH included). Our house is a combination of tastes. Our house is a mix of slate grey, heather grey and tan with tan trim. Each brick is a mix of those three colours. It looks very nice, especially with our exposed aggregate driveway. We've had quite a few people ring our bell and ask for our colours. I always make sure that they are not living in the neighbourhood before I give them the exact colours and types of bricks. I really don't want the same house next door when I spent so much time picking out the colour combo. I'm not an artist so it took much longer than those of you who have an artistic eye. Me not so much!

Anatasia,
Your house sounds lovely too. The hubby and i are very fond of gray, white, black, stones (river rock) stacked stone, brick, etc on houses. Really gives them character. smile We're thinking about putting those interlocking paving stones or something like you have in our driveway in those same colors. Sounds like we have the same taste.

My favorite thing is our new garage door. It's one of the new ones that looks like an old fashioned gate. It has big black hinges and door handles on it. After we had it installed, we changed the carriage lamps on either side of the door to black instead of white. It looks very sharp. smile
