...is for sale, and the idea of that freaks me out. The people who lived there before were loud and dirty. Their dog left me presents in my yard and growled at me if I told it to leave. Their teenager had a super-noisy car and had huge parties when his parents were out of town. AND the woman was a grandmother, and since their yard was so gross, her grandchildren would wander across the street and play in our yard - at 6 in the morning.

It's a four-bedroom and needs a TON of work, but is selling for less than $70,000 and we're close to Seattle. DH and I suspect that a family with a bunch of kids will move in.

I'm sure that some families would be clean and quiet, and might not even have little kids, but we've had horrible luck and I just wanted to see if anyone on our CF forum was interested. It's a cute, quiet neighborhood.

Anyone? Please? I really don't want to put a tall fence around my front yard.

Hope someone nice moves in..someone who will fix up the house and respect your property as well.

Oh, man, I would be there in a heartbeat if I could!
Posted By: M.B. Re: The house across the street... - 02/21/08 03:52 AM
If you're lucky, you'll get a couple. Maybe a pair of DIY crazed retirees who buy it as a combo of home and hobby. That would be nice. The only noise would occasional muffled power tool sounds (during daylight hours) and you'd only see them when they passed by for their evening walk. Hey, if we're going to dream of the perfect replacement neighbors, let's dream big!

If you get more of the same type of neighbors you had before, you might want to consider selling. I'm sure the disastrous looking house and yard they left has done no favors to your property value. If that house runs down further, it could really hurt you financially.

Why? Because you live in a rundown, cheap neighborhood? That makes no sense to me.

Wow, Robotrix, I feel very lucky that I do not have your rude, negative, combative attitude. What on earth are you still doing here? Do you find the atmosphere welcoming to your type of rudeness?

My neighborhood is nice... not that you'd actually ask to find out before you assume that I live in a slum like yours. I live two blocks from the police station and most houses in this neighborhood go for over $200K.

By the way, don't bother responding, because I won't be able to see it. Go back to your child who obviously has a charming, wonderful parent who spends a lot of time online... away from them.
Posted By: Tbunny Re: The house across the street... - 02/21/08 02:51 PM
Trish, the house across from us was like that - a guy bought it cheap to flip it, did really nice work, and sold it to a nice newlywed couple. Same with one two doors down - an architect/wife (no kids) bought it and fixed it up, they have the best back yard on the street.

Maybe you'll have the same good luck with your new neighbors that we've had with ours!
Posted By: KinderFrei Re: The house across the street... - 02/21/08 03:03 PM
Good luck with getting good new neighbors! It's always nervewracking when you don't know who's moving in. Maybe a CF couple will buy the place!
Posted By: flyingaway Re: The house across the street... - 02/21/08 05:23 PM
It's tempting Trisharoni, because you sound like a good neighbor, and I love Washington. But, we're hopelessly over our heads on our current fixer-upper. Sounds like a good deal though (depending on how bad it is of course).

Glad at least that the bad neighbors are gone. We had some Horrible neighbors a couple years ago...college rental with porn-themed parties of 300-400 people (talk about pornification...I've got some stories). When they moved we were SO happy, but also worried like you. We were very vocal about the problems, and the new set of renters has been much better. A fencesitting non-parent couple even!

Good luck. Imagine the best case scenario, and maybe it will come to be.

Hee hee... just to give you an update, so far no one has bought the house. DH hasn't cut his hair in a while, so if he fluffs it, it looks like a huge blondish fro around his head. Whenever he sees someone looking at the house, he fluffs his hair, opens the blinds, and stares at them. It's scared a couple of families away already. It's childish, but it cracks me up. Hopefully people with a sense of humor end up buying the house.

Interesting that Robotrix has been missing in action... Not that I'm complaining. Maybe she got the hint that her postings were not welcome.

Hopefully, you will get some cool neighbors. A couple of years ago, I had some bad neighbors. It was a lady who had all sorts of kids from different fathers and they would run around unsupervised. The older kids were teenagers, so they would throw large parties. The cops were called at least once a week. The landlord would not do anything. The other neighbors filed complaints with the city. After a while, they were kicked out of the place. Its been on the market for over a year. Bad neighbors will bring the value of your house down.

Maybe we should all pitch in and set up a CF Commune there. I may only be able to visit every couple of years but I do love Seattle.
Posted By: .......... Re: The house across the street... - 02/28/08 05:07 AM
Oooh, let's build our commune in the mountains... A gigantic log cabin with a communal jacuzzi. I'll bring the Wii! We could build our own CF chairlift so we can snowboard/ski without little kids in the way.

I am such a post hi-jacker. Or a spaz - take your pick! smile

Summer and winter communes? What's a Wii ???
Posted By: GreyDrakkon Re: The house across the street... - 02/28/08 02:34 PM
The Nintendo Wii is a type of gaming system. It has a remote that the box senses movement from, so swinging the remote swings the "sword" on your screen, or tosses the bowling ball. Some hospitals are actually using it for rehabilitation, since it's FUN but it forces you to actually move your limbs. Good point, Feebee. We'll have two communes - one in the mountains in Washington and one... in Hawaii? The Caribbean? Texas?

I told DH about the commune idea. He said we should call it something else (like the CF compound, although that sounds cult-ish) because communes conjure up the image of little kids running around wildly and we might get some unsuspecting hippies crashing our party. Haha!

The Wii is awesome. I can't tell you how much fun it is.
Posted By: KinderFrei Re: The house across the street... - 02/28/08 02:47 PM
I keep hearing about the Wii but I don't know anyone who has it. What kinds of games can you play? Is it mostly like a regular gaming system but with you standing up to play and move around? Is it really spendy? Sorry for the hijack but I'm really curious about this Wii thing.
Posted By: Tbunny Re: The house across the street... - 02/28/08 02:49 PM
I vote for the Carribbean or Mexico. Warm sun, cold drinks, sand and surf. And seafood. I'm SO there!
Posted By: .......... Re: The house across the street... - 02/28/08 02:52 PM
It's slightly spendy, although it was a birthday present to DH from his parents. I believe it's much cheaper than the new Playstations or X-Boxes. It's not the same as a regular gaming system. We play a lot of sports on it. Most games involve motion, so you really get into it. You can download old games (from old-school Nintendo, if you want!) and it hooks up to the Internet, and you create a character called a Mii that you can transport in your controller and play your own character at friend's houses.

I'm just addicted to the sports, which comes with the system. I particularly like bowling - I bowled a 300 game not long ago, which is a great ego boost, since I can barely reach 100 in real life.

You could probably go to Youtube and find videos of people playing it if you want an example. Otherwise, I guess you'll have to wait until our communes are built. smile

Thanks Trisharoni--I'll check out Youtube! And I'm excitedly awaiting the communes...one in the mountains and one at the beach sounds good!

When it's a really loud, obnoxious fart, it goes FART!

I know this thread is really old, but I wanted to update everyone on the house. It sold, and it looks like a couple with a teenager will be moving in. I've seen them almost every day for the past few weeks, and they haven't brought any small children with them (although I suppose it is still a possibility). They've been putting in tons of hours to fix it up, but I doubt they'll move in before summer. Here's to hoping they'll be nice and quiet. Thanks to everyone for your previous comments. Hooray!

Better a teenager than a small child!

Glad to hear your new neighbors don't have any small children and that they are making the house look nice smile
Posted By: .......... Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 03:14 PM
Well, somewhat nice. They painted the house PEACH yesterday! Practically neon peach. At least I'll be able to say that I live across the street from the peach house instead of the house in disrepair.

DH keeps saying that maybe it's just the primer coat. I don't care - they can paint it plaid with polka-dots as long as they don't have children swarming all over my yard and they're quiet.
Posted By: Anatasia Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 03:18 PM
Yuck, I'm sorry. I would have a really hard time looking at a peach house on a regular basis. Hopefully your DH is right and they will end up painting it a nice terra-cotta colour.

But, I agree, it's a heck of a lot better than having noisy neighbours living in a run-down house.
Posted By: flyingaway Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 04:13 PM
Sorry about the peach. Maybe they'll make the garden nice enough that it makes up for it. I've seen some pretty ugly house colors start looking better if everything surrounding it looks good.
Posted By: CF 4 Ever Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 04:24 PM
Maybe they'll realize it's too bright and paint another lighter coat over it. Some neighbors did the same thing with the most awful neon yellow. It made our eyes hurt! They ended up painting something over it and toned it down considerably. It looks nice now.
Posted By: Tbunny Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 04:46 PM
A few years ago, our neighbors painted theirs sort of a lime green with dark green trim. Ugh. But then, as frieda says, their plantings looked really good with the green - vibrant blooms in pinks and yellows (the wife is a landscape arch. so I suspect this was by design). Now we don't even notice how lime-y the house is, we just look forward to all their flowers!
Posted By: KinderFrei Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 08:14 PM
Hi Trisharoni! Glad you are mostly happy w/ the new neighbors; but what a strange paint color! This thread makes me laugh though--can you imagine what the new neighbors would think if they knew there was a thread about them in cyberspace! smile
Posted By: .......... Re: The house across the street... - 04/10/08 08:52 PM
Hee hee... too true, KinderFrei! Although maybe if they knew, they'd rethink the horrible color. I can't wait to see what they're painting the trim - it's still electric blue from the previous owners. Neon peach with electric blue trim. Wow. I really hope they fix up the yard or something. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I feel like a voyeur or something.
Posted By: CF_GAL Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 01:30 AM
Peach?! I have to say that is a strange color, but maybe it will all look nice when they are finished...like the people with the lime green house someone else mentioned. And it could be worse....my friend lives near someone who painted their house...sit down -- Neon Pink! Yes, bright, glow in the dark, neon pink. IK!

And at least there aren't any little rug rats to put up with smile
Posted By: lngilbert Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 03:21 AM
There is a house in the next town over that is BRIGHT yellow, like a sun yellow, with BRIGHT blue trim. It looks so awful.
Posted By: Anatasia Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 02:48 PM
I've seen a very high end house painted white with purple trim! Everyone I know that has seen this house remembered the awful purple trim. It was that way for at least 5 years.

Funny, they painted the trim white just before the For Sale sign went up.
I know I'm in the minority here but I've always wanted to be a little bit different so here goes. I live in a part of the country where there are cookie-cutter subdivisions everywhere, but I am originally from an area where there was usually SOME diversity in house colors; although not neon pink or sun yellow. The thing with these subdivisions around here is all the houses are the same 3 colors, if you can all them that: white, cream and light gray, with white trim. It's so boring and unoriginal. It seems to me the owners are scared to be the slightest bit different from everyone else.

I understand the need for conformity when trying to sell, but there is nothing but conformity around here. I'm too much of an old hippy, and an artist, besides, to find all the conformity endearing. They're like lemmings around here. I would love to see ANY color on a house, for a change.
Posted By: flyingaway Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 03:21 PM
I love colorful houses, I have to admit...but not garish ones. Our house is yellow with orangey-yellow trim. It's not super bright though. We were aiming for a color that would be like when the sun hits the sandy ground all around it, so it would blend in with the environment. We didn't quite achieve that, but it's okay. We've actually had people pull in and ask for our paint colors, so someone besides us likes it. : )

I had a professor in college who let his young son pick the colors for their house, and he picked BLACK. They painted their whole house black. It looked hideous. Plus, the sun did a number on the wood and was probably not very good for the structure. Doh!
Posted By: CF 4 Ever Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 05:39 PM
We have a lot of Victorians, Craftsmans, etc, where we live, so I like color variety too, but I don't think anyone likes overly bright colors.

A neighbor painted his house tan with chocolate brown trim. The door, shutters and mailbox are red. They also have red flowers trimming the meandering front walkway and in the planter in front of the house. It is gorgeous.

There's another house in the neighborhood that's an off white with slate blue and mauvish trims on it. It actually looks good because they chose the right shades and proportions of what they painted each color. A couple blocks away, someone tried to copy the look and it was awful. They didn't get the shades and proportions right. You need an artistic eye to play with color, I think.
Posted By: CF 4 Ever Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 05:43 PM
On the black, I've seen a few houses pull off black on doors, shutters, trims, and mailboxes and it looks quite nice. I can't imagine in on the body of the house itself, though--and I like black a lot.

Our house is a very dark gray with bright white trim. We have stones (in shades of gray) on it (with black grout) and fence posts (with black wrought iron in between) made out of the same stone. The light fixtures, hardware, etc is all back. It looks really nice.
Posted By: Anatasia Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 07:24 PM
Cherry, your house sounds lovely. I have a penchant for black too.

I've seen an antique red on a house that I loved but a lot of people thought it was too much red (DH included). Our house is a combination of tastes. Our house is a mix of slate grey, heather grey and tan with tan trim. Each brick is a mix of those three colours. It looks very nice, especially with our exposed aggregate driveway. We've had quite a few people ring our bell and ask for our colours. I always make sure that they are not living in the neighbourhood before I give them the exact colours and types of bricks. I really don't want the same house next door when I spent so much time picking out the colour combo. I'm not an artist so it took much longer than those of you who have an artistic eye. Me not so much!
Posted By: CF 4 Ever Re: The house across the street... - 04/11/08 08:36 PM
Anatasia,
Your house sounds lovely too. The hubby and i are very fond of gray, white, black, stones (river rock) stacked stone, brick, etc on houses. Really gives them character. smile We're thinking about putting those interlocking paving stones or something like you have in our driveway in those same colors. Sounds like we have the same taste.

My favorite thing is our new garage door. It's one of the new ones that looks like an old fashioned gate. It has big black hinges and door handles on it. After we had it installed, we changed the carriage lamps on either side of the door to black instead of white. It looks very sharp. smile
