I just started a new career as an administrative assistant with a large firm in a major metropolitan city. I have always been one who desires to look her best and during my first two weeks of employment wore very stylish suits, skirts and dresses along with sheer pantyhose and pumps to the office. I have been getting negative comments from the younger women who work with me and who have been there much longer than I about it. They say I am making them look bad because they do not dress as well as I do. This of course, is there own doing. Very few of them wear pantyhose and one young woman even wears flip-flops. I do not know how they get away with it either. They are hinting they would like me to start dressing down.
I for one, like looking my best. When I arrive at the office each morning I always make sure my hair and make-up are perfect, nails perfectly polished and pantyhose are run free. I would never dream of coming to work without wearing hose. What should I do? I do not see the need to change just for them when I am perfectly happy being who I am and dressing the way I do. Still, I want to get along with everyone.

Be yourself- sounds like you look great! They're probably just teasing you They'll get used to the way you dress, and it shouldn't interfere with how well you get along with them.

I think its good to dress appropriately however I personally object to pantyhose, I refuse to wear them. I have a tan and that will have to do.
The day I see men struggling into a pair of pantyhose with their power suits, then I might think about changing my mind.

Thanks for your thoughts - I am going to take your advice Stephanie and just be myself and dress the way I always have and not worry about it. Perhaps they were just teasing me a little as you said. I like to look my best and for me that includes wearing pantyhose. I think the women I work with are starting to relax a bit as one of them gave me a compliment on my outfit yesterday. It was nice for a change! I will keep you posted.

Sounds like you and I should head out together one night! I love looking nice. LOL
There is nothing wrong with taking pride in your appearance. Looking great and feeling great can go hand in hand.
Don't change yourself for anybody!

Thanks, BBB! I havn't changed one bit since starting my new career. I still dress with style and still wear pantyhose. Like you said, I love looking nice! I could use a few girlfriends like you who understand fashion and the need to be yourself. Women like you with your attitude are hard to come by these days.

Plus, if one is wearing flip-flops and casual wear, it doesn't set the mood for work. For me, getting dressed prepares my frame of mind as well. If you dress professional, you'll feel professional. People will know you're there to work. That kind of stuff gets you noticed by the higher ups.

Don't worry about your co-workers. Maybe you'll be a good influence! I definitely agree that looking professional makes you feel professional and puts you in the right frame of mind for the work at hand.

I dress better than most of the people I work with too, and I have no rerets about it, no matter what they think. Dressing that way makes me feel more confident and professional. They say dress for the job you want, not the job you have.. and if you already have the job you want then go ahead and dress nice anyway. Screw 'em.

This is so typical of women! I am happy that you did not changed who you are for these idiots!
If that would ever happen to me they would of heard what I think of that and them plus I would not of changed anything for them either!
