My aunt was trying to teach me how to knit the other day. I have got the basic concepts (or so I thought) so I tried making a simple scarf to try my skills. The pattern is cast on 64, knit 2, purl 2. Simple.

How long until I see the ribbed pattern emerge? I am sure my tension is off which is to be expected, but it just looks like.... well, nothing lol.

I have a book that tells me for each knit, the yarn is to start in the back, and wrapped around the needle, and for purl to be at the front, and wrapped around. So, I should be switching it for each transition, no?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA

If you're new to knitting, the thing you have to look out for is to make absolutely sure you have the right number of stitches for the pattern. Probably they told you to cast on a multiple of 4, say maybe 36 sts. If you have even one too many or one too few, it throws off the sequence and you won't get ribbing you'll get something else. Often when you're just beginning, you catch the yarn over the needle as you switch between the knits and purls. This adds stitches. What you want to do instead is pass the yarn BETWEEN the two needles. You should be able to see ribbing before you get an inch. Good luck!

Thank you for your insight. I guess I was just impatient to see my pattern emerge. I have about a dozen rows now, and I am starting to see it smile I have already encountered the adding of stitches which was frustrating to say the least, but I caught them before it got too bad.
