I have no kids and got the Mirena this past April because I really shouldn't continue on Depo Provera anymore (been on it a long time). I am actually quite pleased with it and if you want it, I highly recommend Planned Parenthood. My nurse practioner was like "well, we should talk with the doctors and see if they will give you the IUD" and I went to Planned Parenthood and they give them to women with no kids all the time. It is harder for the doctors to put it in correctly in a women with no children so you should really go somewhere where they do it all the time.

ROGUE, you might want to do some online research on the Depo injection. I had one injection a few years ago, and afterward did some reading up on it. It has some horrible side affects for alot of people. I haven't had a normal period since I had that injection.

I was on Depo for many years. No problems, and no periods, which I loved! Then there was concern about possible bone loss connected with Depo, so I went on the pill continuously for no periods as well, and am now on it. I just take the pills straight and throw away the inactive pills. So I get a new pack every three weeks.
I tried one of the pill brands "designed" for continuous use, and it made me bleed all the time! So my gyno changed me to the one I'm on now, and rarely do I bleed. It's actually better protection to take it all the time, the once-a-month week-long break can cause pregnancy risk.

I cannot use hormonal birth control myself, but I know they have a non-hormonal IUD called Paragard (not sure if that was noted already)?
I am considering it and have been consulting Planned Parenthood about it. I'm unemployed so I am covered by their grant- they also have no problem with inserting one for me (asking about wanting kids, etc).

Regarding the mini pill -- isn't that all progestin which is bad for acne and also considered less effective -- or at least that is what i read somewhere. For every bit of info I think i learn, I always find other info contradicting it. It is different for every person, i know. I'm just so surprised at HOW different. People might want to check this out -- I just found on "dermadoctor.com" under articles "acne and hormones" an ok article explaining the hormonal basis of acne and a chart comparing the different levels of the different hormones in all the different pills, which if i really understood the chemistry i might be able to figure out which would be best for me. Any scientists out there? I really have never found a gyn who seems to really fully understand all the bc pills -- they each seem to have a few they like to prescribe and that is that.

Oh dear, I think that if I didn't have periods I would die of stress every month. I get freaked if it's one day late. I NEED that d*** thing for my own peace of mind to know I'm not pregnant. As awful as it is and as much as I hate it, it is a reassurance.

I tried three kinds of the Ortho pill, and my cycles got so whacked it wasn't funny. Then I tried Depo, and for a while (maybe 6-8 months) it was great -- little side effects and no period. Then I got periods that lasted three @#$% weeks. I tried the pill once more last year, and still had really long periods from it, so I quit B/C altogether.
Soon after I stopped the pill, my boyfriend's condom broke, and we realized it too late. Talk about a show-stopping mood-ruiner. Your blood turns to ice, the world comes to a screaching halt, and terror fills your every thought. I had heard about a "morning after" pill, and I got it the next day. It's called Plan B, and it's actually two pills you take -- one ASAP (has to be within 72 hours of the busted rubber incident), and the other one 12 hours later. They're expensive suckers at $40 a pack, but I would have paid $300 just to off the egg. I was lucky -- I called my doctor, and he phoned in a prescription for me, so my insurance covered it, making the total expense only $20.
I'm happy to report the pack worked (praise be to all that is holy), but it's got the worst side effects of anything I've ever taken. It's known to make you very nauseous in the first 24 hours, though I didn't vomit. But it sent my emotions on a ride through hell, the cramps felt like I had an anvil in my stomach, and I felt sick for days. But at least it worked.
Soooooo thankful that my boyfriend now is snipped.

I have done a lot of research, and I'm always asking my doctors if it is okay to be on Depo so long, and they have all said it is fine. I do take calcium supplements everyday, because I know it can deplete calcium. I've been on it for nearly 8 years now, and the only bad patch I had was when I was a couple weeks late getting the shot and I bled for a month! After that, I made sure I was regular as clockwork, and thankfully no preggers or periods!

I had it when I was 19 and had the same thing happen. I threw up the first one within a couple of hours, and was SO sick. The BF had to rush to the clinic and get me another one, and then try to sneak it into the house past my mother ... they had to give me anti nausea pills to keep it down. And afterwards I bled for about six weeks. Ugh. The clinic nurse's comment was "well, with a reaction like that, when you get pregnant your morning sickness will be hell". A damn fine reason to NOT go there, thanks. I'm with you in NOT recommending these as a method of BC!!
