Each fall Beloit comes out with it's mindset list. It's a great tool to help us better understand incoming learners. It's also a cool way to begin an icebreaker conversation with learners of any age.

If you're not in the class of 2011, what was your mindset from a Beloit perspective. Who was president when you entered college the first time? What was your favorite piece of popular music then? TV show? Beloved book or movie? What was going on in world politics?

For me, my first (of many) college experiences, I was a member of the class of '88. It was the middle of the Regan era. Liberals were fighting trickledown economics and the Berlin Wall was just coming down (a piece of it now resides in a local casino restroom here in Vegas!). My favorite government program, the YCC, was de-funded. Sting was on my playlist along with Billy Joel.

What was your mindset?

I would have been in the class of 1979 (marriage and babies). In my freshman year, Gerald Ford was President, we were still reeling from Watergate and Vietnam while the Miranda decision and various civil rights acts were less than ten years old with the controversy still raging. "Free love" was no longer new, Women's rights were (and still are) major issues. I read Tolkein for the first time and fell in love with a whole genre of literature while listening to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Eagles, Roberta Flack and many others.
