Ingilbert-it sounds like your husband's uncle may have Asperger's syndrome. It is one of the autism spectrum disorders. I've been told something like that a few times in my life. The people that have told me that all kind of say the same thing...all of the smart, educated, financially stable have a social responsibility to protect the world by having children. I think, some of them have missed the studies that show more of the highly educated women are having more than the typical 2.2 children and have chosen to have large families. So, the educated, smart "quiver full" women and the smart, educated CF women will surely balance out in terms of childbirth rates. I read a bit about Asperger's, and it does sound similar to what my uncle-in-law has. I think that educated women are the ones who SHOULD be having tons of kids (like the Gilbreths in "Cheaper by the Dozen.") As long as it's not me! Although, there have been times when I've thought, if I've GOT to have kids, I want 12. All at once, and all different ages, like the Gilbreths. And I want them to be free. Oh, and I want everyone to give me free stuff from a free house to a free car to free diapers. Oh, and I also want a nanny.

All of you who dont what children because your lifes too good the way it is should be thankfull that your perants did not think the same way as you or you would not be here to enjoy the wonderful privalige of life and all it has to offer. Not having children, when you can, is not giving some one like you the chance to have what you have, now that is selfish.
This statement really got to me. This guy is assuming a lot. What about the people whose life hasn't been all that. Or, who had miserable childhoods. Why would they want to relive that through someone else's childhood?
It got me thinking, though, and I was talking to my DH about it last night. He makes it sounds like we are "getting away" with something, and we aren't fulfilling our obligation. And I got stuck on that concept for a while.
But the bottom line is, you have to desire a child. It's an awesome responsibility, and if you think you won't like it, why sign up for it?
Anyway, then I just started thinking about the fact that we have lots of skills and talents, and things we can do with our lives. And that made me feel better. Because I am using my other talents. OMG, Happy! When you'e quoting someone like that, could you think about using the italics or the bold feature in the posting field, or use quotation marks, or something to differentiate it from your writing? I thought it was you writing, and that you'd had a stroke or something...it was as if your IQ had dropped 60 points in 24 hours! <catching my breath> Elise

LOL- Elise I had the same reaction, but quickly realized she was quoting :-)
Several of you have mentioned the disturbing pattern of people having multiple children when the first one or even two have significant disabilities or birth defects. It brought to mind an episode of "Extreme Home Makeover" that I had to turn off because I was so disgusted. This family had one autistic child, so they go on to have another, and another, and another, and ANOTHER!!! I think they ended up with 5-6 children that they obviously couldn't support (because they ended up on the show) and the worst part was that only one of the kids was normal (not autistic) so this poor kid has to grow up caring for the others. You would think that after two kids the parents would get a clue, but they just kept popping them out! And, of course, here is ABC building them a custom designed house, buying them cars etc. all because they are supposedly all so wonderful and "selfless." WTH am I missing here???? Needless to say I do not tune in to watch that particular show anymore.

I do worry about the overall intelligence of the human race. What is it - the average IQ is now supposedly in the 80's? That's a little scary, no? And here we thought Idiocracy was just another stupid movie.

OMG, that is so sad about that family with all the autistic kids. What a nightmare.
We have an acquaintance who had 3 kids through various fathers. First kid was fine, second was slow and has learning and social problems, and the 3rd was full blown autistic. I always felt so bad for the oldest boy, because you just knew he was going to have to take care of his siblings to some degree for the rest of his life. He was a great kid. The mom is pretty out there. Well, bad news, the oldest son died in a drunk driving accident (he was driving). So the one kid they were depending on so much is now gone. I could kind of understand why he would be rebelling, that's for sure.
Another family I know just had their 7th kid. Not one of their kids have passed 1st grade on the first try.

Hubby is from a large family (6 children) and all of them are super-geniuses. His parents are lovely people and they are both intelligent as well.
The problem is he has no social skills. None of his siblings ever had any friends because there was never any time (or extra room) to have friends over, have sleepovers, birthday parties, etc. Since hubby never really had to make friends now he has trouble forming friendships with others. He never got a chance to practice as a child and as a grown up it's something that he really struggles with. I think it's so self-centered to assume that your children don't "need" to have friends or relationships with others outside "the family" because they have built in playmates! Sometimes even now it seems like he doesn't really care if we have friends because he was raised to be anti-social!!!!! It drives me absolutely bonkers!

Esley-and what a terrible movie it was..... Idiocracy was so bad that I felt conflicted. I thought that if the movie was this bad, surely it had to have a message.
