Were you or your child(ren) impacted by the SAT scoring debacle? What do you think of the idea that the testing agency will adjust scores upwards for students that were shorted; but, won't adjust the scores downwards for students whose tests were scored too high?

Hmmm, I'm not aware of this, but how did that happen?

What I recently read (and I really, really hope it is not true) is that many universities, when considering freshman applications will "add" or "subtract" to SAT scores. For instance, blacks will automatically get several extra points added to their scores (which is an incredible insult that says they naturally aren't as smart as the general population -- ridiculous!) and Asians will get points subtracted!! What a blow, study hard, Asian immigrants, so that your test scores will get points taken away because you are such good students!

Universities should take test scores and essays and judge them without any indication of the sex, race, or religion of the person.

The error supposedly happened, in part they say, because of programming errors. The CollegeBoard has indicated the problem has been fixed and should not recur (though if you have a student scheduled to take the test and they come up with a mid-range or low score, I'd ask for a hand scoring as a follow-up).

Many colleges/universities do have admissions policies in place that give a student points in the admissions process (though these points aren't added to their test scores--just to their overall admissions scoring) if the student comes from an underserved population. This is not necessarily an issue of race, though some do give points for race still, but may also be an issue of gender, home of origin, economic status, place of high school graduation or any other criteria.

Didn't you mean to say 'black people' there?

Unfortunately, I'm not yet able to edit posts in this forum.

As Jason Ruel, another of our editors so eloquently states,

"I would never want to censor anyone, and we all have our beliefs, but in the order of fairness, please remember that not everyone agrees with each other. We all come from different faiths, different backgrounds, different spirituality leanings. Please remember this so I don't have to censor, ban, or edit posts. I will not tolerate belittling anyone, their family, friends etc. I will not tolerate intolerance which includes religious posts. This does not mean I won't allow them, just make sure you are respectful of others."

All posters, please keep that in mind when you post here.
