I received your e-mail and it is on my other machine so I am using this machine to answer you. Yesterday, the 29th we had an overcast sky so the viewing of Mars was washed out for that night. We have had overcast skies for about nearly the past two weeks in the Tidewater area. Tonight was coll and crisp but the skies were clear. I did catch a good view of Mars but did not catch the storm up there. I also read an article about two tornadic activities that were occuring but did not catch those either. I had my scope set up on the front lawn and there was a bit of light pollution but not enough to thwart some good viewing. I did have two of my grandsons over and let them look at stars in a seeminly empty part of the sky. The idea was to show them that there was more to life than looking at cartoons on the telly. We didnt't look at anything in particular and that was not the goal; the goal was to whet their appitite and engage their curiosity, I think i may have succeeded. My two grandson are still too young to understand what is going on up there but there is no time like the present to start. BTW did you have your scope out or was it overcast in England?

I think the articles were highly optimistic about smaller scopes catching the storms unless you were extrememly knowledgeable about the topography of Mars. After all what you basically see is 'not to see' small areas where you know you should be able to see some markings. Very difficult.
For the past week we have had a permanent cloud cover and rain most of the time - haven't even been able to get into the garden to get rid of everything dead or dying. And this week we are promised just about the same. This morning was promised clear and bright to start, then the day to deteriorate - looking out of my den window (0830h GMT) it is like looking through a glass darkly!
Keep looking Bob.
Pozdrawiam
Leslie

Leslie. The rain and overcast skies make the Roses in England grow nicely and when the Sun breaks out in the Springtime all the birds flock to the park to take in the nice days. Tonight is Halloween and in the Tidewater Area the skies are clear and Mars is glaring out. Tomorrow evening I will set up my scope again and do some more observing. I read the article about the 3 inch scopes and you are correct, it was a little optimistic but some of those small scopes offer a very nice panoramic view of the night sky. Coupled with a good eyepiece some of those small scopes can be very rewarding.
