OK, I brought this up in my reply to Phadrae, and then it dawned on me that I should make a new thread out of it!

So, let's start seeing how many gap-toothed celebrities we can come up with. I tossed David Letterman into the ring, and Phadrae mentioned Madonna, but there's plenty more...

Fun Celebrity Teeth Facts:

One gap-toothed star used to wear a removable "insert" for photo shoots so she could appear with or without her gap. Does anyone know who that was? (Hint: you have to be a little bit "older" to remember her well!)

There are two celebrities from the old days of black-and-white TV who used to wear something called a "Hollywood Denture" onscreen. It was kind of like a clip-on to cover and enhance their front teeth. The same gadget was used by Dustin Hoffman in the movie "Tootsie". Any guesses?

OK, I see this isn't going anywhere, so...

It was Lauren Hutton who used to fill in her gap for photo shoots. So, if you were to look at old movies and ads she appeared in, some would show her with her gap, some without.

It was Bob Hope and Lucille Ball who wore "Hollywood" dentures to enhance their smiles.

Our next gap-toothed celebrity?

Eddie Murphy

Now, can anyone name another?

The gaps are generally considered a sign of beauty. I wouldn't change it if I had one.

Unfortunately, the use of high definition technology in film-making now is going to show up a lot of flaws that hadn't been problems before. This is causing a bit of a panic with makeup artists and the celebrities themselves.

In some african tribes having a gap in your front teeth was a sign of wisdom

Hello "anonymous", Yes, you got it right! It was Lauren Hutton. I've come across many, many people who would never part with their gap! I think it's very much like Cindy Crawford's mole. She wouldn't be the same without it.

Hi Wendy,

That's interesting! From seeing hundreds of smiles in my career, I can tell you that among African Americans, a gap between the two upper front teeth is more common than it is among other groups.

And I think it was the Romans who regarded feet as beautiful if the second toe was longer than the big toe. Maybe someone out there knows if I have that right...

Aren't there ways to "edit out" the flaws? Remember how they used to use "cheesecloth" to make an actress look flawless in the old black-and-white movies? Surely there must be a modern-day equivalent?

If not, yikes! Can you imagine having every one of your flaws magnified hundreds of times, in high definition, for all the world to see?
