Frank, what did you call the cloth used to wash dishes...dish-rag --- we called it a "may-ook" (that is how it was pronounced, I have no idea how it might be spelled.)

I'm not Frank, but I found this thread really interesting, especially "the may-ook mistery".
"May-ook" sounds like Polish MYJOK, a regional version of Polish MYJAK /may-ack/ meaning wash-cloth or dish-rag. Your family probably originates from southern Poland, is that so?

Adam,
I am really happy that you have solved this mystery for me! I was beginning to think that I was alone with my may-ook. And Frank is correct, my family is from Piatkowa (father's side) and Olszyny/Kozlowek (Mother's side). Do you know these places?

Do I know "Piatkowa (father's side) and Olszyny/Kozlowek"?

Not too well, I'm afraid. But I do know a region a bit - I often travel by car from Warszawa to Bieszczady Mountains (which my whole family adores) and we sometimes stop in the Rzeszw region on our way. What is more, my wife's grand-grand mother was born in the south=eastern Poland, too.

THe word for "tea" - in Polish "herbata" is unique and different than in other Slavc countries. It is just a combination of two words "herba+ta" from herb and Chinese word for tea.

I would aim closer home, herb tea [herbata] perhaps.
