My husband and his sisters went to school with a family of children named Avon, Bevon, Cevon (or seevon) and Devon. <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> At least you could always tell who was older.

My mum went to school with a girl called Rosie Bottoms (completely true, I'm not lying, and neither is she)

I used to have a job that dealt with a lot of names of kids in daycare...the worst I saw: Diariah.

I'm guessing it's perhaps pronounced something like dee-AHR-ee-uh? I haven't a clue as I just saw it written.

And, I thought I'd be fair: I googled it to see if maybe it's some foreign name.

All I got were pages where people had misspelled "diarrhea."

That poor kid. And I mean, somewhere along her (his?) mother's pregnancy, she must've said "you know, I'm going to name the baby Diariah" and people actually must've said "wow, that's so pretty, what a good idea." The thought pains my brain.

My mother-in-law was a NICU nurse for many years and came across some doosies. One of the ones that tops her list was "superman". Poor kid - can't imagine what the playground must be like.

I have to say I do get worried when some traditionally boy names end up with a girl and when a girl is given the name of a boy. A relative named his son Sidney and everyone assumes it is a girl. Now they call him "Sid".

"Dorcus" (which, by the way, is properly spelled "Dorcas", is an ancient name, first seen in the Bible. I personally think it's lovely.

IMHO, children should be given names that reflect their own heritage (national or cultural). That's part of being proud of who you are! So I LOVE names like Jane - Anne - John - etc. because they reflect my own Anglo-Saxon descent. Besides, those names are so unusual these days, with people giving their kids wacky names like "Apple". I just cannot grasp why you would do that to a child!
