Hey there. I thought you might like to have a poll -- about the Worst Baby Names you think you've ever heard!

Of course, these would be your humble opinions, but that's ok.

I have some doozies that I'll write in this post. We can add other baby names that you suggest. Then we'll put all the names into a poll and find out what "our baby names community" thinks are the WORST names!

OK -- here's my names:
A'Risin Starr
2la
Oym'unique
Rainbeau Jane
Heavenly Angel
Schlok

I'm waiting to hear from you!

Worst baby name IMO:

Dorcus (female), I think we can see all the names the kids at school (and everywhere else) might call her....
A teacher friend of mine said she had a student named Female - pronunced fa-mall-ly. The parents thought that the hospital named the baby --- female.
Gosh, there's quite a few names that I don't like. Hazel, for one (which is what Julia Roberts named one of her twins.)

My first husband told me a funny story: his Mom was in the hospital having one of her children. A lady was in at the same time as her, and spotted what she thought was a "pretty name". She named her child "Urine" (thinking it was pronounced yourEEN.

Good heavens...

ahhh.... I like the name Hazel. lol
This is supposedly a true story - A woman from Cuba had twins in a hospital in Florida. She was happy to be in the U.S. and wanted to give her children American names. She asked a nurse to help her by advising her of good names -
With this nurse's help, their names were pronounced:
Aran'-zhaa-lo and Lamon'-zhaa-lo - Spelled, they were "Orange Jello" and "Lemon Jello." Pretty bad, huh?
i heard the one about female b4, i dont like julias sons name--phin? waz that suppossed 2 mean? is he looking like a fish these days? i ran into a girl at the local mall had a adorable lil boy. his name was GARRICK!! not very cute, but i said it was interseting, didnt wanna hurt her feelings. my great great great grandpas name was christopher columbus!

Tiflyn, Finn is a very common Irish name. The feminine form of Finn (or Fionn) is Fiona. So the name Finn or Phinn does not sound strange to me (I love Celtic names and love to research them). Phinnaeous (the name Julia gave to her son) sounds more greek, but I could be wrong. I like it. But then again I like VERY uncommon names and do not care for common names like Michael John or Steven or Rebecca Jessica and Melissa. I also loved how Gwenyth Paltrow named her daughter Apple... I think that is a very cute name. Another celebrity childs name that I loved was Debra Messings baby boy named Roman (I think Kate Hudson also named her son that too).
fiona is really sweet sorry didnt know what finn was
i had john anthony picked out but decided wasnt original enuff thats why q has his name and 2 middle names if i had another id like roman pierce
Worst celebrity baby name - Jermajesty (Michael Jackson's nephew)

Name I can't name my son because everyone is using it now... Roman (and that's his dad's name)

Wow -- I wonder where the name Dorcus came from and if it was popular at another time in history.

Anyway, Dorcus is definitely one of the worst names someone could call their girl today.

What an awful thing to happen! That poor child. I'd probably change it when I got older.

But we won't put "Hazel" in the poll, because there are people who like it (including me).

Carolyn, The Beer Fox:

I heard this story a while ago, but I wasn't sure if it was true or not. "Yahoo" turned out to be UNTRUE -- it was reported that a Romanian couple had named their baby boy "Yahoo" because they'd met on the internet. But it turned out that a jouralist was just trying to get things stirred up around the office!

I guess Aran'-zhaa-lo (Orange Jello) could be shortened to Aran -- but then it would still be spelled "Orange". Sheesh!

And Lemon Jello could be called "Lamon" (but it'd be spelled Lemon".) Yikes! I'm glad my parents named me, even if my name has never been fashionable!!

Jermajesty isn't too nice a name, is it?

I'm so sorry about "Roman" -- but even though it's going way up in popularity right now -- you can still use it. Perhaps it is pronounced and spelled slightly different in a different language -- like Matthew and Mateo.

OK -- I have these names: A' Risin' Starr, 2la, Oym'unique, Rainbeau Jane, Heavenly Angel, Schlok, Jermajesty, Dorcus (female), Urine (Your-EEN), Female (fah-mall-ly), Orange Jello, and Lemon Jello.

I just looked the name up, and it is a Hebrew name (spelled "Phineas")... lol and babynames.com says that it means 'loudmouth' lol...

Just for fun I looked up Hazel (knowing very well that it means 'Hazel Tree') and its origins are Celtic and does indeed mean Hazel Tree .

It wasnt listed at babynames.com (did a search for it there), but it would be interesting to see the origin of that name. I remember it because I saw it in a baby names book a few years ago, and the name just always stood out in my mind... its just such a horrible name lol.
Hello, I could not resist seeing what I could find about the name Dorcas. This info is from an internet site:

Dorcas The Greek form, Dorkas, means "wild she-goat," or "gazelle." The Aramaic form is Tabitha.
Thanks for looking information up Nancy and Niamh!

Dorcas (dor'kus) or Tabitha [Gr. Dorcas and Aramaic Tabitha=gazelle], in the Acts of the Apostles, Christian woman of Joppa whom St. Peter raised from the dead. She made clothes for the poor.

Dorcas was in the top 1000 popular names in the United States for these dates:

1930-1939 836
1920-1929 656
1910-1919 730
1900-1909 764

Also, Dorcas was one of the characters in the play, The Winter's Tale, by William Shakespeare.

If you look up "dork" in any dictionary in North America it's meaning is different. Dork must not be a short form of Dorcas, but when I hear the name, I think of a "dork":

dork (drk) pronunciation
n.

1. Slang. A stupid, inept, or foolish person: the stupid antics of America's favorite teen-age cartoon dorks (Joshua Mooney).
2. Vulgar Slang. The [censored].

[Perhaps from dork, variant of DIRK.]
dork'iness n.
dork'y adj.

from The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition at www.answers.com

Sooooooo -- it's probably not a good thing to call your daughter in this part of the world!

But I love the name Tabitha!
niamh, do u know what rainie means? with the name tabitha i knew a chix that they called tabby flabby. it seems everyone will think of some way 2 hurt another human being we dont pick our names, our parents do. they need 2 get over it! also, is there any nicknames for quintin besides "Q"? thanks.
Posted By: Niamh Re: A Poll -- What Is the Worst Baby Name IYHO - 03/12/05 04:21 PM
Tiflynn, Raine is English and it means Wise Ruler. (so says babynames.com)

I guess "Quin" could be a nickname for Quintin, but Quin sounds more like a girls name. Well I just looked it up and it is a unisex name (Quin). So both males and females can use the name Quin. I've only seen it used for girls, but I guess it can be for both. Quin means Quintuplet or Fifth, and Quintin means the same thing.
thank u. i was thinking of quin but 2 me it seemed a lil bit 2 girlish--sorry. theres only one q in our family, perhaps there will be 5, but not 4 a long time. i just got a dog and my mom named her jasmine. if i had a lil girl thats what she wanted her granddaughters name to be. aint that cute? hee hee
My dad's first name is Norbert...his parents called him Norby. He HATES it and doesn't use it at all. He goes by his middle name...Thomas.

I love the name siobann(pronounced shevon) it's Irish. I also so love my daughters names...Brandy Lorraine and Jazmine Danielle. My son is named after Jim Morrison - James Douglas - I would have never agreed to it but James Douglas is a good strong Irish name and actually runs in my family tree. Besides, I think he looks like a Jimmy...

Can't tell I like my kids alittle huh...:)
My great-grandmother's first name was Cleofa and her middle name was Zeldora. Both names, IMO, are HORRIBLE..and I think my great-grandmother agreed, because unless someone called her CeCe, she wouldn't respond to a single soul!!
Posted By: Niamh Re: A Poll -- What Is the Worst Baby Name IYHO - 03/30/05 05:12 AM
Jenna, I also absolutely love the name siobhan (I havent seen it spelled the way you spelled it though... the "bh" makes a "v" sound in Irish Gaelic and so does "mh"- like in my name Niamh "nee-av"). Its funny that you say James Douglas because my youngest brothers name is Douglas James lol.
Other well known Irish names.
*Finnula - sometimes shortened to Nula.
*Brigid or Breda.

PS Another is *Phylan. But terrible if surname is Mycock.
And yes it's happened...poor lad.
OHOH, i read a book where the gal was named Heaven Leigh.

That's pretty bad in my book.

Then again, my son's middle name is Donald (family name) which is also pretty bad in my book, haaaa.

Meg
Snowden...my hubby's great-grandfather was named Snowden, as in "snowed in"

Here's an email I received from someone about this Worst Baby Names topic:

Hello,
I would like to cast my vote for your "Worst Baby Name" poll. I vote against
the names Lexi, Lexus, Alexia etc...I think it sounds too "female
warrior-like" and too much like a stripper on a poor little baby. Thanks,
and let me know how your poll goes!

Diariah. Yes, I saw this name on a list of kids at a daycare center (my job entailed going through charts daycare centers had made of what meals they had served and to which kids on which days to check them for accuracy). My guess is that it's pronounced something like "dee-AHR-ee-uh"?

I thought maybe it might be a foreign name, so I googled it, and all I got was a bunch of pages where people had misspelled "diarrhea."

That job gave me a list of a LOT of weird names (and a lot I got very sick of by the end of it--there are some names I don't want to see ever again because so many people gave them to their kids), but that one was by far the worst.
Neveah is awful IMHO.
i've heard the lemon & orange jello one too many times, I think that's got to be an urban legend.

Of course the same nurse that told me about those also told me about a woman who named her baby Chlamydia - we WERE living in Mississippi at the time....

Seriously, these have GOT to be jokes, right?!?
Everytime I hear the name "Dorcas" i think of Julie Newmar - definitely NOT a geek! She was in the musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and her character was Dorcas Gailen - I think she was the girl that the 2nd oldest brother (Benjamin) fell in love with. Anyway, it may be an old-fashioned name, but she was drop-dead gorgeous, so I can't help but think of it as a beautiful woman's name.

Oh - worst name, this actually is a friend of mine, and why her parents did this I'll never know: Stormie Knight (she's married now, so it's not so bad anymore.)
When I very 3 years old, I had a friend named Dorcus, and she grew up to be an Olympic cross-country skier. I was in college when my mom phoned me and told me to turn on the tv, and there she was competing in the Winter Games.

I had a friend who changed her name as she hated being called Nora. She's Drew now.

The thing I really can't stand is mothers who address their daughters exclusively as "Baby" even as adults, sort of like the character from Dirty Dancing. My first college roommate was named Alexa, but I never ever once heard her mother use it. It was always "Baby".....
I've heard of a Dorcus. But my top worst baby names are all names celebrity name their children - Pilot Inspecktor, Jermajesty, and Audio Science.
My daughter Jordan (she's 8) keeps threatening to change her name to her middle name (Alyssa).

We thought we were being so original when we named her... last year there were 3 Jordan's in her class, and 1 was a boy! (I wanted to name her Amber Alyssa, but her dad said he couldn't see an adult named "Amber" - well there aren't any other "Amber's" in her class!)

The "Female" (usually the story goes that the baby's parents think the hospital already named their baby, and it's pronounced something like "fuh-molly") is also an old one.

My partner keeps insisting his mom works with someone with that name. I'm sure it's just another cropping-up of the urban legend and I'll never believe it unless I actually meet this woman and see her birth certificate, but every time he brings it up I just sort of smile and nod because I don't really want to say "yeah, I totally think you and your mom are making this up."

I have to say that one of my least favorite names is Leslie, I am not sure why, but I do not find it pretty. Sorry to offend anyone who is named that.
My husband is a doctor and he sees LOTS of weird names...he came home about a month ago and said...well today I was seeing a patient's chart and it said "Abcde" and thought hmm...they must have put that because they didn't get the name..and when I went to see the patient, the mom said her little boy's name was "ab-suh-duh" you know...ABCDE!

TRUE STORYYYY..poor little boy was his patient!
Hmm, what a lot of er interesting names in the thread.

Worst name I've ever heard, "Sophocles"- was smack in the middle of cookie cutter suburbia and encountered someone addressing their baby this way.

What were they thinking?? At least they didn't name the kid Oedipus with the Oedipus complex connotations.
Saw this article on MSN, reminded me of the discussion of celebrity names and Irish names

I always hated my name, Judith Eula growing up. My friends called me Judy and the mean boys called me Eula. I think the name was too big for a little girl, but now I love my name. I have a Thor and a Caroline. I don't know how they will feel about their names. Caroline got Judith instead of Eula as a middle name. I really wanted to name her Eula, but my husband said it had to stop somewhere. Eular was my grandmother's first name. I was thinking Caroline wasn't popular until 2 other babies were born the same week at our small hospital with the name. She is already trying to change her name to Georgia. (22 months old)
i teach junior high. several years ago, i had twin brothers named rocky and adrion. LOL! poor adrion got beaten up almost every day on his way home because of his name. he eventually became a really tough kid though. they looked nothing alike and acted nothing alike either.
So what do you make of BrAnjolina's chosen name for their newborn? Translated to 'new messiah'... Yikes
My husband and his sisters went to school with a family of children named Avon, Bevon, Cevon (or seevon) and Devon. At least you could always tell who was older.
My mum went to school with a girl called Rosie Bottoms (completely true, I'm not lying, and neither is she)

I used to have a job that dealt with a lot of names of kids in daycare...the worst I saw: Diariah.

I'm guessing it's perhaps pronounced something like dee-AHR-ee-uh? I haven't a clue as I just saw it written.

And, I thought I'd be fair: I googled it to see if maybe it's some foreign name.

All I got were pages where people had misspelled "diarrhea."

That poor kid. And I mean, somewhere along her (his?) mother's pregnancy, she must've said "you know, I'm going to name the baby Diariah" and people actually must've said "wow, that's so pretty, what a good idea." The thought pains my brain.
My mother-in-law was a NICU nurse for many years and came across some doosies. One of the ones that tops her list was "superman". Poor kid - can't imagine what the playground must be like.

I have to say I do get worried when some traditionally boy names end up with a girl and when a girl is given the name of a boy. A relative named his son Sidney and everyone assumes it is a girl. Now they call him "Sid".
"Dorcus" (which, by the way, is properly spelled "Dorcas", is an ancient name, first seen in the Bible. I personally think it's lovely.

IMHO, children should be given names that reflect their own heritage (national or cultural). That's part of being proud of who you are! So I LOVE names like Jane - Anne - John - etc. because they reflect my own Anglo-Saxon descent. Besides, those names are so unusual these days, with people giving their kids wacky names like "Apple". I just cannot grasp why you would do that to a child!

Wow. That's a whole new level of awful. Poor kid.
My 7th great grandmother was named Dorcus Pinson. She was from TN. I dont' see where anyone names their children after her!
I know men that are named
Primo meaning first
Secondo meaning second
and I also do not like Seven
What is wrong with their parents
Went to school with Symore Butts and Ben Dover!!! my ex friend named her twins ah...well Beaitch (yes you say it just like...i call her Bea) and Basstord(call him Bass!!) also witha no lie either!!! poor kids!!! the start school next year!!! I still cant believe the let her get away with that!!! but the spelling is differant and she told them its pronounced differant too but she calles them like it reads!!
Someone I know named their son - I have to give first and middle names - Dartanion Rine
The poor boy might not be able to spell it but I know he won't be able to pronounce it.
how do you say it? can the mom?
It looks like an aglicized spelling of D'Artagnan (a character from The Three Musketeers), which is pronounced something like "dar-TAN-yon."

Yeah, a bit of a mouthful for a child I would guess...
Melveeta

Honest! I read it in a news story in the Orlando Sentinel sometime last year.

meg
The worse name I have ever heard was Valarie Valentine. I was born on Valentine and that is what my sister wanted to name me.. Thank god it didn't happen.

Dee
I dont know Valarie Valentine is alot better then beaitch or basstord!!! I hope cps take the kids and rename them!!! she is a BAD MOM even with out calling her kids that!!! I when to school with a guy with the last name Rhea (RAY) but everyone called him re- ah and his wifes name is Dainah so you get diarriha and he wanted to name his little girl Gonna!!! i also went to school with Amanda Hold =a man to hold. i worked with a Justin Thyme his mom thought it was funny sents she was in labor 3 hr after the wedding!!! and guess who he married amanda hold the wedding was a blast!!! but you can imagine the jokes that flew!!!! the A man to Hold Just in time wedding was just a start!!!

I have a friend whose wife's name is Dorka.
Okay, here's one. A few years ago, my mom told me about a birth announcemnet she read in her local paper. The baby boy was named Hickory. He has a sister named Honey. The last name is Hamm.

So what are the middle names.....Smoked and Baked? LOL

I wish parents would have a little forsight into the lives of their children when they name them instead of thinking of something that's "cute" or a joke.
For me, the worst baby name I heard is Binga, it's like a female version of Bingo.

This is a true story, my second used Binga as a nickname to her baby girl. Why? because she loves the name Bingo. She said if ever she will have a baby boy ahe will surely name him Bingo.
I have lots of names I dont like lol...

Boris and Bridgette are a couple I dont particularily like. When I worked at a call center, I swear I came arcoss and had to call Harry Dyck, and Jason Death. There were so many names that just made me crack up! Unfortunately I cant remember them at the moment

But there are so many names that you just dont hear anymore that arent neccesarily bad, but ones that you just dont think of naming a baby, or that suit an older person but not a baby, like Gladys or Eugene.
