In light of all the hurricane news lately, I've been worrying and wondering about bird migration and how it's affecting them. Hurricanes and other bad weather have been known to blow birds off course and into destinations they've never been seen before.


Someone on another board I frequent has a weather calendar and posted this tidbit today:


"...today in 1960, Hurricane Donna wiped out 40 percent of the white heron population of south Florida"

I wonder when and if we'll ever know the extent of the damage done to species after this recent spate of hurricanes in the south east....

As if Florida hasn't suffered enough hurricane damage for this year, it looks like Ivan could be aiming for a direct hit on its west coast. Hopefully they'll be spared the wrath of the two previous storms.

I just ordered (and received) two new bird migration books and hope to understand more about the mysteries of migration after reading both of them.
