I don't know anything about making soap, although I'd like to learn about it because I do love nicely scented soaps.
Also, do you have any suggestions for how children can get involved? Maybe it's something they can do now that summer's out? How old should they be in order for them to be able to do it safely?

Well, Sonja, you're in the right place for learning! LOL
As for projects that can be done with kids. There are really tons. i do CP soaping with my 9 year old. He's only not allowed to stir the lye water or pour the lye water into the oils. once it's mixed in nice and good, I even let him stir the raw soap. Of course, we've been making soap over here for quite a while, so he knows what he's doing.
For a family just starting out, I'd suggest Melt and Pour. On my site, Under Soap Bases, there's many places where you can get M & P bases and molds, most of them even tell you where they're located, to save you on shipping charges.
Melt and Pour is as easy as it sounds. Melt the base in the microwave, add your color, botanicals, scent, or even other oils, if you choose, and pour into the mold.Viola! done! :-)
i'd say a melt and pour project is good for children 5 and up. however, when we're making for my three year old, i let him choose the mold and scent. I'd let him pick the color too, except he doesn't know colors. :-)
