There was no fanfare or countdown when Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth. On April 12, 1961 with a “Let's go!”, Vostok 1 blasted off. Gagarin was an exceptional individual who came from humble beginnings, and at 34 his life ended all too soon.

I remember that memorable occasion. When I was a kid I had a scrapbook with items like Yuri Gargarin and the X-15 breaking the sound barrier and other exciting news. They were exciting times.

Since 2001 April 12th has been Yuri's Night, an international celebration of space exploration. Here is the website for the World Space Party.

Young folk in Ireland know how to party, so the Yuri's Night Space Party sounds like it will be good fund. And any profits go toward funding Irish students to go to the International Space University.

It's April 12, 2018 and it's Yuri's Night. 57 years ago, Yuri Gagarin was the first human to orbit the Earth. In 2011 Christopher Riley made a movie to commemorate and recreate this journey.

On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin saw what no human had ever seen before: the Earth from space. "First Orbit" allows you to imagine that you are making the historic voyage. Film shot from the International Space Station creates the views, but you'll also have Philip Sheppard's music.
