Help!

I'm stuck and I've only just started playing... I've even cheated and browsed a few walkthru's and I'm still stuck...

I'm in the room near the start where you have to drop over the balcony to release a lever/switch which will open the door to let yorda thru. The problem is that I cannot find the lever... Where is it in relation to the save sofa? I've looked all over that room and cannot find it anywhere...
