I know there are a lot of patterns to knit all kinds of toy animals. Perhaps a spaniel toy pattern and then you change the yarn texture and color to get the right look would help. There a lot of patterns for American Water Spaniels, changing to a solid dark brown yarn with some eyelash or boucle for the head, body and feet I think would give the right effect.
I have heard of spaniel owners spinning and knitting with their dog's fur - do you do this?

Great ideas. Thank you. I will pass them on to my friend. The idea I had was to maybe knit a spaniel pattern in loopy stitch lol.

No, I don't spin but my late needlework teacher did and she used her dog fur to knit a beautiful sweater for her husband. It was so soft.
