I always think that the Victorian era makes the perfect setting for a mystery. Think of fog, gas lamps, horse drawn carriages and the dark side of oh-so-proper polite society.

The Woman in White has all the trappings of a great Victorian mystery. Published in 1859, it was a huge success.
The 1948 movie, reviewed this week, leaves out some of the story, but is still a thoroughly good classic mystery, with a nicely sinister atmosphere and some good acting.
