Okay, on a site it says:
walk to the upper northwest section of calm lands.The guard blocking a narrow pathway down into the gorge will have left his post,allowing you to pass.

I can't find a path or a guard! Where exactly is it supposed to be?!

And damn those birds! I would have got 0:0:0 on the race if it weren't for one stupid bird that hit me at the end, giving me a time of 0:1:3! Okay, I'm calm now.

lol that happened exactly to me to and i finished with 1 sec left cos of one lame bird at the end. However the path is right at the top of the calm lands over to the left, theres a small pathway that leads down into the gouge, but it is being blocked by a bloke unless u talk 2 him straight after uve won the chocobo race. He should be by the shop.

If you follow the western border of the area going north, you can't miss it. Just keep trying to walk off the edge (no need to be too ridiculous, just keep part of your motion in the direction you can't go) and keep a No Encounter on so that it doesn't take forever.

If you take a close look at the map, you can barely see it, I think.
