Broad-shouldered, long, dark and handsome, El Mulato is sultry and wizened, tasting of ripe fruit and chocolate, with a whisper of smoke and a dash of sweetness which are barely tempered by its gente warmth. If you are having a BBQ, try my mulato chilli sauce - it is perfect with lamb and pork chops.

If you are not a fire-eater, do try cooking with the Mexican mulato chilli. It is low on the heat scale and has a wonderful flavour, slightly sweet, slightly smoky, fruity, almost chocolatey - and it definitely will not blow your head off!

I love chiles. Is this in dried form or fresh and do you know where to buy it/them? I would love to create a recipe with this.

The Mulato is a dried chilli, Allyson. I get mine in the UK via mail order but I am sure there are countless suppliers in New York. The Whole Foods Market in London stocks them so WFM in NY? Once you have laid your hands on some, do cook with them, their flavour is quite wonderful.
