That sounds like an awesome series of articles to write about, with examples so people can see what you mean. I usually don't have people in my photos - I like bugs and flowers - but I suppose the same ideas apply. You don't want the bug staring immediately at the edge of the image. You want to follow his gaze into the center.
One of my favorite Mused photos is by Mark Berkery, of an ant exploring -

You follow the ant's gaze into the vastness before him. I think the image would lose a lot of its impact if the image was cropped with the ant's head at the far right of the photo.
