As children we expect our parents to live forever. Unfortunately this is impossible but no matter how prepared we think we might be, the loss of a parent leaves a large gaps in our lives.

When a Parent Dies

Thanks... This comes at a time when my father-in-law has been notified that treatment could extend his living beyond the next few months. Being 3 time zones apart is not making this a simple evolution. The themes you brought up will greatly help me in comforting a wife, grandchildren & great-grandchildren, as well as the others in the family.

I am glad it was some help to you. This is such a hard time for the whole family. My thoughts are with you.

I am not sure how young your grandchildren are but I will add a link to something I wrote about children and grief. My youngest son was only 8 when my husband died so it is partly learnt from experience. The most important thing i found was to always be honest - to their level. They often understand more than we give then credit for.
