So the last couple nights I've dreamt that I saw one of my ex's in my dream. This is an ex that I really don't care to ever see again. I never think about him. I don't like him in the slightest. I'm now married, and I haven't even seen this guy in like 4 years! Why on earth would he be in like 3 dreams this week? I don't really talk to him much in the dream, he's pretty much just there. We make eye contact and maybe a few words are exchanged, and I remember feeling like I do in real life about him. Disgusted. I don't get it.
I've dreamt about other ex's in the past too. And it's always just that he's there. We may talk to eachother, but just as if we were friends. It's strange. Or randomly, I dream about someone who I haven't seen in years and years. Like I had this old friend about 6 years ago. I haven't talked to her in about 5. And we were friends for about 4 years when I did know her. We kinda just went our separate ways, never really knew why we stopped talking, but a couple times a year, she pops up in my dreams.

Maybe they are or were just thinking about you and your dreams caught wind of it.

Two things might be happening- sometimes we identify a circumstance or time or place with a person in our past and when we are consciously or unconsciously reminded of those circumstances, we'll dream about that person or place. For instance, whenever I am worried about finances, I dream about the place we were living a number of years ago when our finances were at their utter lowest. My current circumstances might not be anywhere that close in association, but my subconscious mind takes me back to that house in dreams so that I can work it out. I hate those dreams as I shudder anytime I remember those few years, but now I know it's just a symbol for something else going on in my life. Perhaps you could come up with a few descriptive adjective about the time you two were together, or about his principle characteristics (both good and bad). Then look for any hook in your current relationship or life right now. That's where I'd start. Then, there is the outside possibility that we're sometimes receptive to the thoughts of others, or even to them when significant events are going on in their lives. How often have you had someone call you up out of the blue and you can say to them, "I was just thinking about you!" ? When we've loved a person we stay attached to them in some ways for good or for ill. You could try to put up a "guard" around you as you go to sleep - basically barring him from your dreams- if you are bothered by his presence. (drop in to the New Age forum and ask about that if you want more info) Better first though to pay attention to see if his appearance is your subconscious trying to tell you something. Good luck.
Be kinder than you need to be. Everyone is dealing with something.

I had one of those dreams a few months ago. It was with my ex best friend (still call her that eventhough we have not been close in many years and technically we were not really best friends...we talked a lot on the phone and all but she was never really there for me and she quickly forgot about me and replaced me not too long after moving to Ottawa to study), don't remember the dream (did not really remembered when i woke up) but it was weird dreaming of her.

It's funny but people often pop into my mind when they are thinking of me. They call and I say, "You just popped into my mind!"
It happens that way in dreams, too.

When we dream of other people, we are being encouraged to look at certain personality traits of those people, sometimes dreaming of ex's can suggest that we are currently seeing some "repeat" aspects of those relationships in our current one and it's a clue to avoiding pitfalls of the former one. It's not always something bad. When we dream of other people always thing of what is the first personality trait you can relate to that person....is that person a cheater? honest? hard working? flashy? conservative? and so on.....and then apply that character trait to your current place in life and see if there is anything to think about. I'm of the belief the people in our lives, for better or worse are all people we've lived in past lives.
Dreams kind of connect these channels in a few ways. WE can see part of those people in ourselves and usually have something to learn from each other.
I also feel dreams can continue to carry chords to these people so even if we have parted they may still in some way have a fondness or be thinking of us.

We come down in soul groups with every one of us playing an important role in mutual growth. I like the way you describe our connection as with chords. Chords make beautiful music.
