A Girl's Garden by Robert Frost

A NEIGHBOR of mine in the village
Likes to tell how one spring
When she was a girl on the farm, she did
A childlike thing.

One day she asked her father
To give her a garden plot
To plant and tend and reap herself,
And he said, "Why not?"

In casting about for a corner
He thought of an idle bit
Of walled-off ground where a shop had stood,
And he said, "Just it."

And he said, "That ought to make you
An ideal one-girl farm,
And give you a chance to put some strength
On your slim-jim arm."

It was not enough of a garden,
Her father said, to plough;
So she had to work it all by hand,
But she don't mind now.

She wheeled the dung in the wheelbarrow
Along a stretch of road;
But she always ran away and left
Her not-nice load.

And hid from anyone passing.
And then she begged the seed.
She says she thinks she planted one
Of all things but weed.

A hill each of potatoes,
Radishes, lettuce, peas,
Tomatoes, beets, beans, pumpkins, corn,
And even fruit trees

And yes, she has long mistrusted
That a cider apple tree
In bearing there to-day is hers,
Or at least may be.

Her crop was a miscellany
When all was said and done,
A little bit of everything,
A great deal of none.

Now when she sees in the village
How village things go,
Just when it seems to come in right,
She says, "I know!

It's as when I was a farmer--"
Oh, never by way of advice!
And she never sins by telling the tale
To the same person twice.

Les, I hope Lestie enjoys the poem as much as I did!

And to Lestie, best wishes on your birthday.
Here's a virtual cake to celebrate.

OH MY!

Thank you everyone for your good wishes which I have received from all over the place .. how spoilt I feel. How special!

I have had such a fine day, celebrated with good company, fine friendship, food, wine, many smiles and beautiful weather. Am feeling mellow and as I read your messages to some really nice R&B Jazzy kinda on the way to midnight music that I really like.

On reflection can't remember having spent such a nice day.
T H A N K Y O U all so.

Thank you too Mona for my virtual cake, almost too nice to chomp but consider it chomped along with the gobbled up good wishes from you all. I also loved the poem Les, thank you too and it resonates ... when I went home for a year in 1976 to spend a year with my folks who were living in Zim at that time with me in SA, my Mom did just that, gave me a patch of ground.

My Mom had been the gardener while I grew up and so I learnt a lot from her by osmosis and default, but this was my own patch and it was then that I learnt and started my own love affaire with all things green and growing that has not stopped since those days! The front was a triangle (isosoles not equilateral he he)and I had a concrete and square garden patch behind the kitchen with a trellis I had made. Ah, those Zim sunsets over my garden and the little barbecue/braai days we held, and the quiet beers I enjoyed with my Dad - I treasure the memories for sure.

It is past my Sunday night bedtime now (as early as it seems) here in Johannesburg being around 11h30pm and ahead of you guys in the US ... differing amounts from 7 to 10 hours and so on. Want to savour and get all of my birthday out of this day, what a lucky person I have been.

I look as if I have done something mischievous, am sitting here with a really wide grin and just can't stop the pleasure. Don't want to anyway. Thank you one and all for this patch of self indulgence and memories - thank you BellaOnline, can't imagine life without it and you all now! I am still looking for my red shoes Connie, just have to get to Kansas one day, darn this Lotto fairy, do you suppose it's/heesh is deaf?

Cheers and so much more...
