We adopted a little chihuahua last year. Even though we hadn't intended on that particular breed, we couldn't resist. Here in So. Cal, there is an overflow of abandoned chis. Made popular by celebrities and pop culture, chihuahuas were overbred and when people don't understand their innate tendencies, they dump them at the shelters. I was told that once they are bred, they get dumped, too.

Anyway, our chi is adorable. But she is so small and cold all the time, we put sweaters or t-shirts on her. The problem is that people either think she's cute or that we are nuts. We aren't just dressing her up like a Barbie doll. She needs the warmth!

She loves to bask in the hot sun directly on our cement patio. The house is too cold for her.

What you do think about clothes on pets?

I just had this conversation with someone at work laugh

It's an interesting topic -- I think that in some cases -- like your little one that needs the warmth, clothes are perfectly acceptable. I see so many people walking their dogs in winter (I live in Western New York) that look absolutely miserable because of the cold, snow and ice. Especially dogs with short hair -- they don't have the protection a husky or other long-haired breed might have.

I know some people who put boots on their dogs, too. In an area like mine, it can really help prevent frostbite or other pad damage from ice and salt on delicate paws. In hot areas, it can help keep paws from getting burned.

I think as long as the clothes serve a practical purpose for the dog, it's a good thing. I'm definitely not a fan of costumes or the dressing up a dog for the sake of making it look "cute".... usually they just look uncomfortable. Let kids be kids and let dogs be dogs!

Well, the small size of dogs such as your dog chihuahua has short hair, they indeed need a dog clotheswhich can help them prevent the clod especially in winter. But you have to pay attention to the dog skin disease, you may just put the clothes on the dog when it goes out.
