Preparedness and plans are a key to possibly surviving a tornado. Tornadoes can waylay the best of plans, but those well rehearsed plans can still save your life even if you have to go "off script." Save your exotic pets, pets, as well as the rest of your family members.

What do you do to prepare for tornadoes and other detrimental situations?

You made a good point on where the pet porters are stored. Sure enough, mine are under a pile of boxes in the closet. If there had been any type of an emergency, even an injured pet and I had to move the animal quickly to the animal hospital, it would have taken up valuable time unearthing the porters. Excellent artice as usual.

If you plan and practice a routine enough times you can certainly improvise if everything doesn't go according to plan. You know the routine. You know where stuff is. Same thing with planning fire drills with your family. If you're prepared and practiced you will be ready if there is a fire. Do you have a prearranged meeting place after you exit the home. Same thing with a tornado. Have a prearranged meeting place if you should become separated.

If you have memorized a script and for some reason that script can't be followed you know the script well enough to improvise. If you know your emergency plan well enough, and the emergency doesn't go as planned you know your plan well enough to improvise. You would be comfortable with an emergency situation. Mother Nature just doesn't follow a script real well smile Lives can be saved if you prepare.

I am probably out-dating myself but when we were kids we had air raid drills. Under desk hands over head, I believe it was. It became so automatic I could see why practicing would be important. Less unsuredness the more you are able to act or react with a level head.

I completely agree Calla. I remember the air raid drills. We practiced fire drills, especially when the kids were young. Having two story houses was always a big concern with me. Getting stuck on the second floor during a fire! We had rope ladders, practice using them, and always - a meeting place to make sure everyone was safe and sound.

I think the fire drills are an outstanding idea. Better yet is that meeting spot to count all noses. The faster you realize someone is missing the quicker you can act.

With tornadoes you can get stuck in the basement for quite sometime. If your, your family and animal family members are all stuck down there you will need food and water, especially water. Some animals can live long at all without food. You cell phone might not necessarily work. I can see how planning ahead would help, I LOT

Let'a get out a couple of ideas on how to contact or to get someone's attention if you were trapped in your basement. What would you do. One thing we have is a very loud police whistle. It is in a Rubbermaid bin in the coal room of the basement. It also has cereal bars, bottled water, a battery operated radio, first aid supplies. What else would be of use in an emergency kit? All your ideas would be very helpful.

1. Ways of contacting other people to let them know you are trapped.
2. Items needed in your emergency supplies
