I am writing up some of my rv experiences, but was curious what you guys thought of living cheaply (and often free) in an RV, whether van, motorhome, trailer or bus.

Ever done this? Ever want to? What are your favorite tips?

I have an RV that I have called home, and also a little travel trailer that I use for quick camping trips. I used the trailer last week and boondocked for five days.

I could not believe how inexpensive my living was! I had a lot of canned and powdered goods I have got free from food stamps, and an old saucepan and wooden spoon - i cooked everything over the fire. I had a metal kettle from a thrift shop that i boiled water in for tea.

I made the fire from free wood I had collected in the area, with papers saved from junk mail back at home, for kindling. I take great pride in my 'one match' fire-making skills, so a single book of matches (which you can pick up free at many places, like casinos) was sufficient for me. (I did have a lighter in my purse just in case).

I had a large water pig on its side to use for dish and body cleaning. There was a creek nearby for refilling. If i wanted to drink the creek water, I could boil it.

I sat around the fire when the sun went down and then went to sleep, so i didn't even need to use the candles I brought for reading. I slept in sheets and blankets from my own bed, with pillows from home. No sleeping bag needed. smile

I slept well with the sounds of a running creek, under the lovely saguaros, in a very quiet and beautiful canyon.

If i had to, i could live like that indefinitely. I could stay in the warmer areas in the winter and move into mountains in the summer. I'd use local food pantries and local water sources, and just dump my personal waste at RV campgrounds when things got full.

I do have a lot of tips to add on the subject, but wanted to hear what your experiences have been. Would you live like this?
