Carnival in Germany began in ancient times, when masked Teutons made as much noise as possible to chase away the evil spirits of winter. And in the Cologne area it now begins with Weiberfastnacht, where women take over the streets and no necktie is safe from the giant scissors they carry.

Francine what a wonderful tradition - and great to know it has survived nearly two centuries. I hsve visions of poor, unsuspecting tourists or visitors in complete shock. Interesting to know that tie cutting against the tie-wearer's will could end in court proceedings - has this actually happened?

Yes indeed it has happened Asha. Not everyone is a fan of Carnival so they mostly keep out of the way for the days it takes place, however others are determined life should go on as always, so wearing their Givenchy/Salvatore Ferragamo/Dior silk ties they go out into the world.
Unfortunately this is not always a good idea when surrounded by scissor carrying revelers, and so court cases loom.
It happens to tourists too of course. They know about Carnival, and are often there just to see it happening, nevertheless many have no idea at all about the tie snipping element. Luckily not many tourists wear ties because simply saying 'I am a tourist and I don't speak German', does not always save them if they are dressed 'in their Sunday best'.

And if they are not speaking German when they say "I don't speak German" they may not be understood anyway! Great defence if it got to court....
