Under the right circumstances, when I am not fatigued, when I wear orthortic bracing and when the ground level and firm, I walk well. Perhaps a casual observer would not know that I have any difficulties. It turns out, however, that I no longer walk well on the beach.

That has to be hard on you, especially if you love the beach like I do. I get strength from water sources and can not imagine what it would be like if I could not walk on the beach. Don't give up, get a friend to help you and sit in a chair while you enjoy the beach. But don't stop going! If you are not opposed to it check out a website. It may have assistance for you to be able to get around on the beach! Beach Wheelchairs are equipped with large, wide wheels which can roll across the sand without sinking.

Hi Jori, I'm sorry you are having difficulty walking on the beach. I don't know if this helps, but In Aruba I noticed some hotels have boardwalks with special areas for wheelchairs, that go right down to the beach, so you can relax on the beach with your family. I know it's not the same as walking with the sand between your toes, but I felt encouraged seeing knowing this option is available.

I love the water, too. One of my favorite water activities is kayaking. As long as I have a little help getting the boat in the water and a walkable path to the water, I can still kayak.

So far, I have not used a wheelchair. I may have to find out if beach wheelchairs are rentable and from where. Then, I would just have to get over my pride and just use it.

Now, I just need to get myself to Aruba! (During Michigan winter, that's sounding pretty nice...)
